I think its generally accepted that TNG didn't really get good until season three. I've been watching a lot of TNG episodes lately on Netflix including episodes from the first two seasons which I have generally avoided in the past.
But I'm starting to think that maybe those two seasons weren't quite as bad as I remember.

The first 2 or 3 seasons are not all that great. But within those seasons there are a handful of good episodes. I think TNG hit its stride in season 4.

Yeah it became brilliant with Best of Both Worlds, although there are still a few good episodes in the early seasons, it was enough to get me hooked anyway.

I love the first two seasons. There are some great episodes, Datalore is one of my favorites of the entire series. 3 and 4 are definitely more consistent, but there are still some mediocre to terrible episodes.
I also really like Wes, his absence hurt the show in later seasons in my opinion.

I quite liked seeing Troi in that short skirt & boots uniform in the early episodes What a pity they did away with it.

I prefer the first 2 seasons, esp over the last two. The best episodes are in the first two, don't know why most trek fans think otherwise. (the Neutral Zone, Measure of a Man, ..)
After season 5 they literally didn't know what to do with the show anymore; Sub Rosa, Genesis, ...

I thought the first two seasons were so-so. As so many other people have said, things really got a lot better in season three, which is when they got rid of the Ferengi (the silliest ST bad guys ever) out of the picture.
