There was no Betty, General Ross, Rick Jones or Glenn Talbot. The only character adapted from the comics was the central character, all the other characters were replaced by original creations like McGee, that would be like doing Batman without Alfred or Jim Gordon.

When they remake it, they might use that story line.

They would go the newer approach because fans who are 20 would think how is 70's Hulk the Hulk of today or has become less believable over time which is why you you don't see an Adam West inspired Batman nowadays.
