Ashford probably would make one hell of a poker player. He certainly out-played Drummer.
He knew (or was reasonably sure, since he bet his life by sabotaging their escape) that Drummer, as Captain, would put the best interest of her crew and ship ahead of her own.
Ashford gambled—and it paid off big time. Now, he is right where he always wanted to be—in charge.

I don't think he sabotaged their escape, if you watch the scene carefully the screen on the box flickers on its own and some sparking sounds are emitted, then Ashford just pull his hands of the console without pressing any button so i do belive it was a real accident.
