Discuss Supergirl

Hello everyone, with the season done and the two split up for now, I think this is the time to give my full 2 cents on the seasons couple of Kara and Mon-El. I have been giving a few of my thoughts on a couple reviews, but I want to lay it ALL out. If anyone agrees or disagrees with this, please reply

I know a lot of people have been either with or against the couple, mainly due to Mon-EL himself. Some didnt mind his presence while others wanted him killed off, but I like that they had him on the show. My problem was how they made his character and how they made the relationship. Here are a few points explaining why.

  1. They altered him into being Kara's second I may not be that familiar with his comic version, but I know that the version they had on the show was wrong. I'm not saying they should have had him as an exact copy, but they completely altered him to be JUST Kara's love interest. He is supposed to have all the powers as Superman and Supergirl, but they powered him down to a ridiculous degree. There is also the fact that while Daxam was xenophobic, there was nothing implied about them being more resembling to the Dark Ages. If you dont see why Im critical of these points, please wait till my third point.

  2. They tried to portray him a jerk. Ever since he appeared in the season, we had to see episode by episode, scene by scene, of him getting called out for being cowardly, selfish, and evil. His whole arc was about him being an immoral alien who Supergirl needed to "fix". The reason for most of these are completely ridiculous to me because there are very logical reasons for what he does.

  3. In Parasite, he gets called selfish for not wanting to be a superhero and trying to use his powers to make money. While using them for mercenary work was not a good thing, he did go on to working as a bartender at the alien bar. While the merc work was bad, he was still an alien refugee on the planet. Not only would this make him less invested on the planet as Kara is, it also means that if he wanted to use his powers to make money and etch out a life, then he was entitled to. Heck, someone should have told Kara this and reminded her that there is a whole community of aliens keeping to themselves and she hasnt been bothering them. There is also the fact that his weakness is lead, a metal that im pretty sure is in most guns these days. All it would take is some lucky shot and he could have gotten killed by an ordinary mugger

-There are also all the times he disagreed with Kara, called her out on HER flaws, and the story made him look like a bastard for it. An example would be in the Ms. Mxyzptlik episode, when he kept telling her how to handle the imp and then getting called jealous and insensitive. It was established that he had more experience with being like MXy and may know a thing about dealing with them, whether they were pretty or not. Kara keeps ignoring him, calling him jealous, or making him seem sexist for trying to protect her. At this time he had already seen her get nearly killed by people who were less powerful than Mxy, so being worried about her nigh-omnipotent stalker would be appropriate.

Another one would be Homecoming. When Jeremiah was rescued, Mon El was the first to be suspicious. But whenever he tried to talk some sense, everyone was yelling at him for it. Kara was the worst of all and this is because he announced their relationship against her wishes. She ignored all of the good points he was making, and called him insensitive, just because of an innocent gesture. It should be remembered that this was just as much his first relationship as it was HER...ahem.... "first time". This made him just as happy as she was and just as entitled to express it. I was actually happy that Jeremiah was a traitor and I was only mad when they didnt show everyone apologizing to him.

Then there was her reaction in Star-Crossed. When she found out about his status as prince, she acted like he lied to her for no good reason, and that he was as much of tyrant as his parents. She completely ignored the possibilty that he had his reasons, refused to sympathize with his perspective, and apparently forgot how monarchies work. Even when Rhea called her out on how judgemental her people were known to be and was obviously manipulating her, she was too busy being hurt to see that. Even his actual escape from Daxam was understandable. While it was tragic, Mon-El couldn't do anything for the people there, even if he did have his powers. He was royalty and making sure the royalty escape is sort of the first thing to do in an emergency.

Mon-El wasn't being self-centered, he was thinking like a normal person. As people, we have to be realistic about everything and think about things more logically. it is what Kara should have learned by now or should have been willing to learn. She is not invincible, she is not all knowing, she is not perfect, and this is what Mon-El always tried to convey to her.

  1. It insulted the feminist element that the show dealt with I know that there were a lot of people who gave the producers flack for making the show about SUpergirl. Despite this, they worked through it all, made the show a hit and smashed any gender barriers that was being put up. But the way that they had the relationship go, with Supergirl always being right and Mon-El always being the supposed sexist, was just insulting to the theme they made the show about. The Last time i checked, feminism was the pursuit of equality for females, not superiority. They could have had Mon-El be opposite to Supergirl in terms of worldviews, with the same powers he originally had. He could have made her more conscious of reality, empathetic and understanding while she made him more idealistic, hopeful and aspiring for the better. He could have been one more person that helped become the All loving hero we know her as.

Since im hearing that hell be in season 3, I hope they do a better job with their relationship then.
