비트윈 토론

Is this a teen show? Yes, it is. So that's out of the way.

This pretty little town is victim of a virus which kills anyone over 21 years of age. Only the town of Pretty Lake is affected by the virus, so it is quarantined by the adults, and the young people are left to fend for themselves.

Once that basic plot is established, the show becomes a festival of popular Hollywood cliches. A lot of main characters are introduced, including the children of a rich family. These kids could not be worse people; they seem to have read a book on ways to make people hate you, or maybe they wrote it. They are contrasted with some very nice poor kids, who are harassed and victimized by the mean, brash, rich kids.

Anybody see that trope before?

There is a pregnant girl, and we don't know who the father is, though there are bad clues, red herrings no doubt, about who the daddy is. Eventually I am sure the audience will learn 'important lessons in not assuming things' when the identity of the father is finally revealed.

There is a great deal of teenage angst and drama. After watching several episodes I feel it is safe to assume that the drama, the angst, the emotional meltdowns, and the reflexive victim posturing will probably be a constant backdrop to wherever the plot goes.

I read somewhere that this show was similar to Glitch. Wow, the shows are worlds apart. I won't be watching Between any longer. I would rather watch something I have already watched and enjoyed. This show is going nowhere.

On a side note: Someone should teach the producers about volume, background music, and dialogue. On many shows, and movies, the volume on dialogue is too low to understand the speakers over the background music in certain scenes. That is true sometimes for this show, and for many other shows as well.

For example, when two people are talking quietly in their bedroom, almost mumbling, or when people are talking in a nightclub with music blaring; the people talking are apparently close enough to understand each other over the music, but the camera isn't. Sure, the producer is going for "realism". People sometimes speak very softly, and nightclubs can be very noisy. But the producer makes it exceedingly difficult, sometimes impossible, to understand the actors.
That negatively impacts the viewer's ability to follow the story, and that is frustrating.

And how real is it really? If you're in a nightclub and are unable to hear the person speaking over the background music, you move closer and tell them to repeat themselves. But the viewer cannot move closer. He can only watch two people apparently having a conversation in a loud nightclub, with no idea what they are saying. To make it real, and allow us to follow the story, the producer should make the speaker's volume louder than the background music, as it would be if the two were standing very close together so they could hear each other.

When two people are softly mumbling, half whispering to each other, the volume should be raised so it is close to the same as other conversations in the show. It still comes across as mumbling, half whispered speech, but the viewer can understand what they are saying.

Producers should abandon the practice of trying to manipulate emotions by ramping up the volume of the background music. If they want us to feel tension, anxiety, fear, excitement, sadness, or love, they can do that with content. Amping the volume is a cheap trick. When they ramp up the background music, it just hurts my ears and pisses me off.

I already had to turn up the volume to hear the mumbling half whispered dialogue.
