I just finished this series and really liked it. I'm a bit confused about the relationship between two of the characters, Kitty and Major Ross. What happened there? She was so in love with MacDonald and then all of a sudden she's all about Major Ross and moves in with him. I watched this show on Hulu so I'm not sure if they aired an edited version with missing conversations. Did I miss something? Does anyone have any clue how this relationship took off? I get that he treats her better with time and she likes that he believes what she says. What I don't understand is why does she seemingly end her relationship with MacDonald. Hopefully someone can share some insight.

Better late than never nukyatalks!

It seemed - in spite of their love for each other which I imagine the backstory of which may have been a "first love" that developed on the long voyage to NSW - Kitty and the corporal hadn't exchanged much in the way of insightful verbal intimacy. From her POV it was no doubt telling, and revealed his lack of emotional depth, when he was so clueless about the point of the major's "story". And although he was sharp enough to correctly feel threatened by the switch to a platonic relationship between her and the major, he was COMPLETELY OBTUSE about how deeply he wounded her with his insistence she resume sex and forego talking. This petulant, smothering insistence couldn't help but cause estrangement: he wanted her to behave like a whore.

There was no turning back when, with some sly manipulation on Major Ross' part to ensure the outcome, MacDonald carried out his ruthless orders in the final episode. This further disillusioned her, shattering her perception and certainty that he would allow compassion to overrule obedient soldiering.

Having said all of this, I felt from their very first glance at one another that the attraction was likely mutual between Katherine McVitie and Major Ross. And although she was illiterate, it was clear that she possessed a bright intelligence and wit that the major seemed to appreciate. What beautiful woman doesn't welcome being admired for her mind - and especially a woman who'd worked in the household of a lord but whose station in life deprived her of formal education? The major's rank, class and wealth may have made him even more attractive once the ice was broken.

That was a great analysis MerryApril! I'm think I'm going to watch the series and pick up on your points since I have loads of time indoor, lol! Thanks!

It's on my list to re-watch too nukyatalks!
