Discuss The Missing

Personally, I felt a bit disappointed after watching all of the 8 episodes of 'The Missing'.

It was not bad but a bit drawn out. For most part of the series it was concentrating on the 'pedophile'-angle.

Which, as it turned out, had absolutely nothing to do with the actual resolution of the case.

And the whole ordeal of Vincent Bourg and his chemical castration (or whatever is was) and his seeking solace in a support group was a complete red herring.

It had nothing to do with the case anymore after his release as a suspect. So what was the point of following him?

The reveal felt rushed and had a 'tadaa!'-feel about it.

Again, for a 3 episodes series it would've been sufficient.

But holding viewers 'hostage' for almost 8 hours and then present them with this ending was a bit of a let down.

I choose not to see the second series.

I do have to agree that the whole tale was dragged out almost to the point of frustration. Each episode gave us tid bits of info to keep us going but most of the time the scenes were just pointless. The continuous bouncing between time periods was, at first, unique and interesting, but by ep 5 or so became tiresome. How it ended indeed was anti-climatic. 95% of what went on had not needed to go on. But it was watchable. Better than most American TV.

I agree and I disagree. I liked the format once I got used to it (it was confusing at first). And I'm kind of frustrated by the ending because either I missed something or it just wasn't revealed. What happened to the Sargent's father? Did she take him out of the hospital and kill him? Was he really faking his illness? If he is still alive, will he face charges in season 2? And for that matter, is Starz going to air season 2?

The tale of the two girls and the Sargent etc was season two! Sorry we were talking season one (the Tony Hughes story)!

Yeah, I thought the same about her father... was she going to do away with him or care for him herself. It wasn't revealed so you did not miss anything (except you assumed season 2 was the first season. Show aired first in 2014). Was he maybe faking his ailment (though brain scans can confirm dementia so that is unlikely). He showed small signs of it in the 2014 flashbacks. So he was either playing a long game or really had it.

Yeah, sorry for the mixup. I was unaware that there was a season prior to the storyline I was referring to until about two or three minutes ago when someone in another thread sort of explained it. I then went to the front page, and clicked on Season 1, and read the description and realized I have seen Season 1. I just didn't realize they were part of the same series. I saw Season 1 so long ago, but I remember a lot from it. I'll tell you that I didn't like the format in Season 1, but I didn't mind it in Season 2. I can't explain why. Especially since I found Season 2 so much more confusing story-wise than Season 1 ever was. Maybe because of how many girls went missing vs. the fact that it was just 1 little boy in Season 1, so things were easier to keep track of.

Thank you for explaining about the Sargent's father. I'm glad I didn't miss anything. The only reason I wonder if he was faking the illness was because of some things he said (to Henry Reed, I think) and maybe decided to play sick (I figure if he could step in and abuse his authority and fudge "Sophie's" DNA to make it say it was Alice's, he could fake his illness too, including brain scans) so that he could avoid prosecution by the authorities. He was a narcissist, and it just struck me that he'd do anything to keep himself safe, and when his daughter finally did confront him, it just seemed like there was something in his features that came clean like he was for a moment admitting she'd caught him out. That's why when she took him wherever she finally took him, I wondered if she'd killed him. I mean, it seems as though she knows he'll never be brought officially to justice, and all of those girls deserve some justice so I wondered if maybe she decided to bring justice on her own.

And now that I know you two were discussing season 1, I can honestly say that from what I remember, yes, it was drawn out too long. I don't remember all the details, but yeah, the final reveal of where he'd been kept, and who'd taken him? it could have been done a lot sooner. The back and forth stuff got annoying. But I don't know about only three episodes. Maybe four or 5. Three might have been too rushed, but you're right, 8 wasn't necessary.

Season One's reveal made 95% of what went on in the show pointless. There was no reason for the pedophile story line since it had nothing to do with the boys disappearance. Yet ep after ep was spent on the wealthy contractor and the young adult. And then the drug addict sister of the man in with the Romanian mob. All pointless except that the head cop\later mayor called in the mob guy to dispose of the body. The saddest thing of all to me was Tony not accepting his son was dead and ending up arrested by the Russian police and probably being committed to an asylum.

Season Two had me very confused over who was who. Was Alice Sophie or Sophie Alice? When we finally see both are alive Alice looked nothing like Sophie so how they could have been confused for each other I do not know. Not as much misdirection as Season One, though. There is talk of a third go round or a spin-off featuring Baptiste (so we have to assume he survives brain cancer).

@Oldnewbie: I agree on them not really looking alike, but I am guessing that's why the tattoo was drawn on her, so that the family would overlook their doubts/concerns and say, "But see, it has to be her. She has the tattoo." Look how in denial Sam was until the very end. Only the mother believed Julian and that's because USUALLY mother's just know their children, but it took her a while to come to terms with things and start listening to Julian.

Good. I'd like another season with him in it.

And you're right about Tony, but sometimes parents just can't forgive themselves for their failures (Tony not keeping a better eye on his son) and in this case it caused Tony to go into denial and keep up false hope. No matter what anyone said, or how much proof they gave him, he could not move on, and he could not let go.
