Discuss Jane the Virgin

Spoilers.........

Ok dang. I was not expecting that last scene. What the heck! Iwas just getting used to the idea of Jane and Rafeal together. I had succumbed to it. I didn't think that they would ever bring him back. I thought he got a new gig. Damn I am so surprised. I pick Michael over Raf any day but I wonder how they are going to explain this away. Did Rose kidnap him and keep him holed up some where?

They brought Michael back from the dead?

Can we be sure it's Michael? It's a telenovela after all, so it might be his long lost unknown twin brother who pretends to be Michael to ... I don't know why ... but he's in fact Rose with another mask who is a double police agent to uncover Jorge's past in the Russian mob. Or something like that ...

What I found weird was Rafael's reaction to the news. So he goes to a dark place when his old and dead "rival" shows up again, fearing he would loose Jane once again. That's what I call confidence in oneself - not ... rolling_eyes

But, again, it's a telenovela ...

I stopped watching at about the 3rd or 4th episode of the 3rd season? It had 'jumped the shark' in my book.

Hm, I don't remember a jumping shark in season 3?!? stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye

I binge-watched the first 3 seasons in a few weeks last year, and what I still like about the show is the meta-level of Jane being a writer, the narrator telling his own story, Rogelio's telenovelas within the show, and the show being a telenovela itself and commenting on all that. I still appreciate the exceptional writing when it comes to this certain aspect -> and I still want to - ultimately - know how Jane and the narrator are connected (for a long time, my theory was that Mateo is the narrator looking back at the life of his mom -> but I'm not sure about it anymore)? I also still like the acting - Jaime Camil and Yael Grobglas are both fantastic, and I have problems to watch Gina Rodriguez in anything else without thinking of Jane the whole time ... smiley

But when it comes to the actual plots of the show and the twists of the narrative, I don't really feel emotionally engaged anymore. I'm not sure when this happened, but I would say the reason is the mix of realistic storytelling on one hand and the over-the-top elements of classical telenovelas on the other hand. This worked for quite a while, but once I was aware that the next twist will come soon and everything will change again, I lost interest in how the characters feel about something or someone. Except for the things I mentioned above, the show has become a guilty pleasure for me. Still enjoyable, but not something I think about for a long time after watching ...

Yeah, it probably is a long lost brother. Lol. I forgot for a brief moment this is telenovela influence and they mentioned the lost twin thing earlier in the show. Funny thing is I am already past the surprise and am looking forward to seeing the actor again.

I binged the first 3 seasons and this season is the 1st watching in real time. Now that I think about it, I am not overly invested in characters direction either. I know something will change because it is seudo telenovela. It is different from anything else I watch and I like that. I wasn't expecting Michael though, so good on the writers. I was totally bummed when he died and I hadn't expected any kind of return.
