These were the original titles on Crunchyroll back when they were released. They were changed by Marr back in 2017 for no reason.

It depends what source you're taking these from. Both Funimation and Crunchyroll licensed this series in English when it aired.

The Funimation episode names from https://www.funimation.com/shows/ping-pong-the-animation/ are largely what TMDB currently uses (I find these more accurate/faithful translations, too), except for the following:

  • Episode 8: Changed to "The Hero Appears" from "Enter the Hero"
  • Episode 9: Changed to "Gonna Cry a Bit" from "I'm Gonna Go Cry"
  • Episode 10: Changed to "I Thought You Were the Hero!!" from "You're a Hero, Aren't You?!"

(I find CR's Episode 4 title which you included in your post borderline ungrammatical, fwiw.)

The site Reelgood at https://reelgood.com/show/ping-pong-the-animation-2014 also gives slightly different translations even though they purportedly take these from Funimation, e.g. Episode 10 is "You're a Hero, for Cryin' out Loud!"

Wikipedia gives yet a different permutation of translations: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping_Pong_(manga)#Anime

Given all this, I think the versions on the site are OK.

To be honest, I wasn't too happy with the Crunchyroll titles either, but I didn't know that Funimation was also streaming it back then. Its titles are definitely better, I changed episodes 8-10 and I'll close this issue then if that's good with you!

Sounds good to me! Yup, it was simulcast by Funimation in the US and Crunchyroll in Europe, and both did their own translations (and neither were all that good).

I translated the script for this series as well so I have my own personal prejudices and opinions and preferences when it comes to this all, haha, but I do agree it'd be beneficial for the ones on the site to all match up with one official source – thanks for changing them! (Now just to mildly grumble about the official episode summaries… Episode 10's especially irks me – so literal! I don't think too many people read those though, at least, so whatever.)

Though while we're discussing things, the current "Overview" is something I myself wrote and think it provides a much better summary of the series, and accurately captures its spirit & gist, than the various licensors' summaries. I saw someone previously changed it to some very short, bland blurb they lifted from some other site, and I've since reverted it – so I'm hoping it will stay as-is from here on out.
