Discuss Gotham

I don't mean that in a facetious way, I just mean, when there are sooo many phenomenal TV shows out there and only so many hours in the day, does this one merit the time? I enjoyed Daredevil, but for the most part don't really watch superhero TV shows or movies. Favourite series off the top of my head are Halt and Catch Fire, Breaking Bad, Brotherhood, The Wire, The West Wing, Sports Night, The Killing (original), The Bridge, Mozart in the Jungle... That said, I'm a big fan of Donal Logue and I understand he's a prominent character in this.

Also recently really enjoyed Nobel, The Principal and Sneaky Pete.

I absolutely think this show is worth watching. Does it rank up with some of the bests? Honestly, no. It can be a little slow and cheesy at times, but it is different from the usual superhero shows. It's more about the corrupt city of Gotham, than it is about Batman. I do love that he's there, and we get to see him grow up, but he's certainly not the main character. The show reminds me a lot of Batman Returns, which I love, because that is my all time favorite Batman movie. So if you like Batman Returns, you will definitely like this show. Unfortunately I can't really say if you will like it or not, given the fact that I haven't seen most of the shows you watch, but I would suggest giving it a try and see if it pulls you in.

Thanks, I will :)

yes it is but only for the villains. (except Fish Mooney)

This show is great. It finally returned from hiatus last night and it was a great episode.

Definitely worth watching. Much better than I expected. Donal Logue is terrific in it, and production values are good. The villains are impeccably cast too.

thumbsup_tone2 This. I am really enjoying Ed Nygma especially now that he is The Riddler and am glad that he found the right 'hat'. Will be glad when Penguin makes his re- entrance.

I hope they don't drag out the Bruce/clone storyline for too long.

I love this show.

No. And judging by the shows you watch, definitely no. It's not awful, but it's pretty run of the mill. I watched about 5 episodes and didn't hate it, but could find little reason to keep watching. Especially when there's shows like The Wire out there. And Daredevil is a million times better than this.

Judging by your taste, you should check out The Shield. It's pretty old now, but you'd get way more out of it than with Gotham.

Thank you for your considered response. I've watched the first couple of episodes now and I'm inclined to agree with you. It's not that I hated it, I just wasn't impressed enough to warrant spending hours of my life watching it. I'll try The Shield. In the past I tried Sons of Anarchy instead but it didn't grab me. I understand it's a very high standard though so I might need to revisit.

Currently enjoying Bloodline, House of Cards and Better Call Saul (which is the best of the three). Also a belgian thriller called Public Enemy, which isn't bad, but isn't a patch on its Scandinavian equivalents.

Sons of Anarchy is from the people who did The Shield but I also wasn't drawn in by it. It's a glossier, more commercial version. I don't think SOA is bad, just very overrated. People like it because it's about bikers. The same way people like Gotham because it's about Batman. The Shield was done before SOA and honestly is way better. It's grittier, the stories are better, the characters are more complex, it's got more to say. Think of a more fun version of The Wire. The Wire is a bit more intelligent, but The Shield is more fun.

I also love those three shows. You clearly have good taste, sir. I haven't heard of Public Enemy. There's so much good stuff around it's hard to find the time to watch it all.

Indeed! Exactly why threads like this are useful. Well if you see anything unmissable, do share!
