Discusión Halt and Catch Fire

I don't know whether I want to go so far as to say the show jumped the shark, but it was chaotic, meandering, lacking a plot focus, and not particularly compelling.

When stacked against its opening two seasons, which were, frankly, extraordinarily good, this was a big disappointment. They shouldn't have sidelined Lee Pace for the majority of the series, the Donna/ Cam subplot was never particularly interesting, and the Ryan relationship wasn't around long enough to be particularly impactful, so the morose effect it had on the cast members didn't really hold weight as a viewer. The set up for S04, which I understand will be its final season, was also rushed and ill thought out, as well as contrary to the actual story of the World Wide Web (unless my history fails me - feel free to correct me if it does!).

No, I loved season 3.

It was never meant to mirror history, but it did go astray in season 3. I can't even imagine what they have in store for season 4.

I just got around to watching the rest of S03 this week. This show never made sense historically. I’m not sure what it is, a soap with championing Commodore 64’s comes closest. I do seem to recall the NeXT had no OS and was a joke until Linux was put on it. What came from that was a browser that became Netscape and GUI’s appeared from work at Xerox PARC as AT class boxes were becoming common. The ‘inventions’ were organized around standards more than a person. If anything it’s a drama of rewriting history, I’m surprised it’s going to S04.

I agree with you and I have to add that the costumes and the outlook of all leads are inaccurate too. . 80's had very distinctive fashion style, clothes, haircuts, shoes... should I mention the shoulder pads perhaps, (check Don Johnson's costumes from Miami Vice TV series to get an idea) the sort or non existent sidebums for men and of course the big hair for women. Younger women like Donna didn't have such kind of haircuts that came in fashion during the 90's. The most fashionable women's haircut back in early 80's was that of Princess Diana.

These series don't look like they are taking place in the 80's. When on top of that the plot rewrites the history of PC then I can't see what is the point of making a story about that era.

I don't think the clothes were that off - they weren't in the fashion industry - they were nerds. I think they spent time trying to get the clothes right. Not everybody had big hair or dressed like Don Johnson in the 80's. Plus it's just a TV show - they're not trying to rewrite history. lol

The clothes are completely off ( and trust me on this.. I remember the 80's and the 70's too). What makes you think that nerds were not dressed with what was available at the stores back then? Fashion trends were very specific back in the 80's and there were not that many alternatives available like it is now. On the other hand there were not that many female nerds back then not even in US and that because the industry was in its infancy and so not well known in the general public and the ( any whatever kind of ) related equipment was extremely expensive. Women got in the industry much later in the 90's. The so called nerds, developers, programmers, sys admins and so on where all men. But ok.. let's say that for the sake of the plot there were some women too!!

Of course it is a TV show but if it is inaccurate on the depiction of the era, and inaccurate of the depiction of the progress of IT industry then what is left ? Just the interactions of the main characters that look somewhat odd if you take them out of that specific era and that specific working environment.

I'm not going to get into this discussion at this point AGAIN. I've watched the show since the beginning and there were many discussions on the IMDb about the realism of the show from all sides. I happen to have lived in Dallas in the 80's and when the show started I had a fit about Cameron's clothes. But then I started thinking about where I was in the 80's and where Cameron was and her clothes actually made sense. In fact, that jumpsuit in the photo they use hung in my closet. I didn't wear it because I was already in the business world. I know they were meticulous in the clothes they bought because I ran across an Instagram account for the costumers of the show. The point is not everyone dressed the same and from the early 80's to the late 80's fashion changed a lot. I can't comment on the tech realism or women being in the business but I know clothes.

If you care, there is a website where a guy archived as much as he could from IMDb and there are semi-current posts on the HACF page. I don't know how much is on there about this topic because most of the interesting convos about the realism of the show and the 80's were done way back when the show started.

Really? Then..I apologize for bringing the same discussion here. If it was discussed on IMDB ...! and archived from the X, Y, Z ex IMDB user!! wow then it seems that the case is closed and there's no need to discuss anything at all anywhere else.

P.S. I don't give a ..... about what was discussed in IMDB because these discussions don't exist any more. You are in TMDB you know....I don't know and I don't care about which IMDB ex user archived what discussion, where s/he moved it and what the discussion was all about. If you don't want to talk about this show's inaccuracies just don't do it, but don't bring me as an excuse a deleted discussion that even if I had read it would be impossible to remember who said what in it.

Sorrry! All I meant was there were some really good conversations about this with many differing opinions that I can't remember and it's not like there are going to be a lot of people here talking about this subject. There were a lot of issues talked about including the technology aspect and women in computing. I have a friend who posted a lot. I'll see if I can find her and she can join the convo. Actually, I might be able to get a couple people. When IMDb shut down people scattered and I will have to look for them. All I feel qualified to talk about is the fashion of and perhaps the culture in Dallas at the time.

To be honest, I feel like none of this is particularly relevant to my original post unless you subscribe to the view that a show can only be entertaining if its costume is 100% accurate of its era. That's not a factor I ever considered. My complaint with this season has nothing to do with costume and everything to do with story development and scripting. As I said, the first two seasons solidified the show as one of my favourites ever, and S03 totally undermined that.

I didn't say that is the most relevant thing. I've just add my thoughts on what Hobnobber said. Now if my thoughts have been already discussed by any of you or any other person on IMDB boards is something that it is impossible to know or to recall because the IMDB boards don't exist anymore and I have read only part of the threads that were related with this show there. On top of that some ex IMDB members had to change their nicknames when they moved here, so it is impossible not only for me but for anyone else to know who is who and who said what on which board or thread.

@cinles I hope you didn't take wrong my previous post. I apologise if I've been a bit ironic but it must have been the 10th time that I read on a discussion here that the one or the other subject "has already been discussed on IMDB a couple of years ago". IMDB boards were huge and I didn't read neither joined each and every thread. :)

I for one am looking forward to another season because they are just getting to that timeperiod when I myself started to learn expressions like PC, www, AOL, Netscape, modem etc. Not that I haven't loved the show before, it's just more fun to watch when you can relate.

Uhm, Season 3 was a masterpiece compared to the meandering, unfocussed, sloppy mess that was Season 4.

My favorite seasons in order: 1, 3, 2, 4
