I thought season 1 was the best by far. The big Artic Biosystems facility located up in the Arctic Circle, in international territory with virtually no government oversight or interference, surrounded by nothing but snow and sub freezing temps; something about that setup intrigued me. The first season was full of mystery. I had no idea what the story was on the virus, or the Ilaria Corporation, or what Hitake was up to. I was hooked. Each episode was one day in the story, and each day there were answers to some questions, and new questions to be answered so plenty of mystery remained. How did Major Balleseros figure into the story? Obviously he was a bad guy, though he later redeemed himself somewhat. Who was the "employer" that both he and Hitake answered to? What was Hitake supposed to produce for them? Why didn't the vectors attack him? What was his obsession with Dr. Walker?
Also, I thought Hiroyuki Sandada was great, and played a big role in making the first season so interesting. I was disappointed that he had such a limited role or that he had lost his grasp on reality in season 2.
Season 2 was so different to season 1 in so many ways. Alan Farragut was now a fugitive instead of a big wheel at the CDC. The location for the majority of the season was an isolated island in habited by a cult leader (Steven Weber) and his followers. Weber did a good job in his role. But something about the whole cult business didn't appeal to me.
I will binge watch season 1 from time to time, but I still can't really get into season 2.
