Discuss Doctor Who

For weeks now I've been following the fan discussions about the upcoming 10th series and it's been horrific. Like, half of the fans hate the new companion Bill already with a passion, though the first episode with her in it has yet to air. Three quarters of the fans complain about show runner Steven Moffat - for totally contradicting reasons, mostly. Two thirds complain about the new show since 2005 in general, talking about how superior classic Doctor Who was (though, to be clear, only until the 5th Doctor, 6 and 7 were apparently also shit). The rest complains about Capaldi being worse than any other Doctor except maybe Matt Smith. Like 90 percent complain about the newest incarnation of the Master, especially since the second trailer where she gasp DABS dun dun duuun for half of second, apparently ruining the whole character if not the whole show by doing this.

Wtf is going on? Why don't you just stop watching and caring? If you like your 4th Doctor, then watch his episodes and shut up.

But apart from that, how anyone can take a show about a renegade alien with two hearts traveling in a police box time machine using a sonic screwdriver and fighting huge pepper pots so seriously is beyond me. Don't get me wrong: I LOVE Doctor Who, but I love it because it is absurd and without real continuity and writers have so many possibilities to do awesome stuff with the material. But - it's always a bit laughable, that's part of the fun of it. And not to forget it's still supposed to also be for kids, you know.

So, how many Doctor Who fans does it take to change a light bulb?

Doctor Who fans are tend never to be happy, especially the classic Who fans who dislike the political correctness gone mad type of things.

I see this argument several times but I don't agree with it.
As a Doctor Who fan I am invested in the series. I love the concept and have seen stories which are incredible.
If I don't think that the new series is going in the right direction, is squandering the potential it has with poorly thought out endings and repeated character types I find tiresome, then I can state this if I want. Should I just stop watching as soon as the series isn't to my liking? That's my decision. But bad Doctor Who is still Doctor Who, I watch it for those moments of brilliance that sometime come up. I wish they were more frequent. As much as someone has the right to praise an episode I have the right to say it was rubbish.

To take the example of Bill, well I haven't seen much of her but she didn't impress in the teaser.
She seemed totally unimpressed by the Daleks taking the piss out of them. The Daleks are meant to be the headline threat, they kill people, they hate everything different to them. If in the first scene of a companion she doesn't take them seriously why should the audience.
It's not the actresses fault, it's how the scene was written and maybe she will be great for the rest of the series, but I have only the teaser to go off, so my opinion so far is not good.

Finally Doctor Who has always been a family show not just a kids show.
During it's run it has attempted to be educational with historical episodes, it has tackled subjects such as pollution and prejudice. It can be so much more that just a wacky adventure that's trying to sell the latest sonic screwdriver toy.

Hopefully this new series will be amazing, and if not I'll still watch it, but then go and watch my 4th Doctor grin

I do agree about the judging part. I mean when Matt Smith was announced as the doctor I thought he was too young but I watched and actually think he's a great doctor. For such a young doctor I feel he plays the doctor's age so well. When Bill was announced I wasn't sure what to think. I'll admit I've been sick of the 21st century female assistant and hoped they would try something different but I wasn't going to properly judge a character from a small trailer. Yet many seemed to - many claimed she was the worst actress we'd had an all this and that just from small clips. If anything she's a nice change from the likes of Clara and so on, the type of assistant who seems to know everything. Bill feels for real and relatable. As for Capaldi he reminds me of my favourite doctor, Jon Pertwee and I feel sorry for him as it seems from day one people have been discussing his replacement.

I sometimes as a fan dislike sometimes the way they go with episodes and the show in general but I do also feel like some fans are never happy and just love complaining.

News flash. There are MILLIONS of Doctor Who fans. We're not Daleks. We have different thoughts and opinions and we express them.
