Jill et Stan Pembroke sont un couple épanoui, avec une vie professionnelle bien remplie. Mais avec trois enfants à la maison – Lila, 14 ans, Douglas, 12 ans et Jason, 10 ans – ils ont un peu de mal à concilier travail et vie de famille. Pour les aider à faire face au quotidien, ils décident d'embaucher Charles, 19 ans, un étudiant qui va pouvoir les aider à s'occuper de leur charmante mais épuisante progéniture...

Charles se retrouve face à un dilemme : comment va-t-il pouvoir aider Lila, Jason et Douglas à se trouver des activités extra-scolaires alors que lui-même n'a pas la moindre minute à lui ? D'autant que les choix des enfants sont pour le moins... surprenants.

M. et Mme. Pembroke préviennent Charles à la dernière minute : ils ont décidé de s'accorder un peu de temps et passent la soirée dehors. Charles va donc devoir s'occuper des enfants, mais aussi de son ami Buddy, sans oublier Gwendolyn, avec qui il doit passer la soirée pour étudier...
