Discuss Outlander

I got hooked on this show because I am descended from Frasers who came to America and settled in North Carolina. And they came from Scotland about the same time as Jamie and Claire did in the show. My sister told me the show was about Frasers so I started watching. The first season was great I thought. But I think there is far too much raping shown in this series. At times the show is like a meditation on negative emotions by people who seem to intentionally stew in them, and take the viewers with them.

And this fourth season, with Brianna back in time with Jamie and Claire, is worse in this regard than any of the previous seasons. Brianna’s emotional state is often that of an outraged, injured, betrayed, victim. When she learned that Jamie had beaten Roger she blew up, shouting her anger. She had one line I thought summed up her attitude when she shouted at Jamie:

“NO!. You don’t get to be more angry than me.”

Brianna was determined to be the most angry person. Her outrage was greater, her injuries trumped all others and gave her the right to dominate everyone else. Often she accuses others by repeating their statements back at them as questions, her voice dripping with outrage and disbelief. She wallows in anger, injury, and resentment. Brianna is the new star of this trauma porn.
Worse, she is the queen bitch of victim town, and uses constantly wounded emotions to dominate those around her. It is disgusting that they allow her to keep getting away with it.

In the first season Jamie would sometimes tell Claire when she was getting a bit bitchy, and even gave her a hard spanking once. Unfortunately I think we are unlikely to see Roger or anyone else step up and punish Brianna for her constant bitching.

I am sick of her.

I'm not sure if you've watched Season 5 or not but it's fairly agreed upon within the Outlander fanbase that Season 4 is crap. It has some good parts but overall, it's just not very good and not at the level the show has been at in previous seasons. Brianna gets much more tolerable as the show progresses, especially throughout Season 5 and I wish the show had done better with her and Roger as characters when we were first getting to know them but I think they've finally rectified that mistake.

I do agree with you about how rape is overused in this series. It's a pretty common complaint from people that watch it. Jamie's and Brianna's are the only ones that have been handled well in my opinion.
