Discuss Goodnight Sweetheart

"Goodnight Sweetheart (1993-1999, 2016)", a BBC One television series, is a 1990s British science fiction sitcom about tv repairman Gary Sparrow. He has a very ambitious, career driven wife, Yvonne, and a somewhat goofy best friend, Ron.

One night, after a call-out in London's East End - just love the "EastEnders" - he accidentally discovers a time portal at Duckett's Passage, which transports him back to the 1940s.

He enters a pub and meets the cute barmaid Phoebe. Soon he takes a liking to her and so does she.

Gary starts leading a double life. He travels through the time portal between his present 1990s and wartime 1940s.

To explain his absences to Phoebe, he tells her that he's a secret agent.

Time progresses at the same rate in both time periods. For example when a day has passed in 1993, it's also a day later in 1940. So, after a year, when it's 1994, it's then 1941 in the past. Nothing too complicated about this time travel.

It's a typical British comedy with the only difference being the time travel element, and there are a lot of funny situations, including meeting several historical figures.

The end is bittersweet because Gary has to choose between staying in the past with Phoebe, or returning to the present for good and trying to save his marriage with Yvonne.

***SPOILER***

This choice is made at the end of the series for him. When he tries to return to his own time once again, the portal has vanished, forever....?

Sorry wonder2wonder but that doesn't tell me where he finished up ...or am I missing something?

Oops, mi dispiace, I forgot that a part of the sentence under SPOILER was still 'invisible', now you can read it. relaxed

I'm not going to peek. Let me guess. One of the women find the time wall and meet the other. Then they fall in love and leave Gary shaking his head. Am I correct? Is there a talking lion? I bet there is. Is Gary's last name 7. Those crazy Brit- Coms. 🦁⏰

Thanks wonder2wonder...I don't want to be a bother but I'm intrigued ....... did she know that her husband could go back and forth in time? And the woman in the past did she know his secret?

SPOILER ALERT...SPOILERS ALERT...SPOILERS ALERT

SPOILER ALERT.....SPOILER ALERT....SPOILER ALERT......SPOILER ALERT.

I feel for him but ultimately he shouldn't have "played around " with the time portal.

It's like when you play with fire ..in the end you get burnt.

I'm trying to imagine the wife's torment ..one day her husband just disappears..he caused her a lot of pain too.

His wife Yvonne didn't know until the final episode, when Gary was away for far too long. She goes looking for him at Ron's apartment, kicks Ron in his left knee grin , and then suddenly she sees a message appearing on the wall (at the same time we see Gary writing it in the past).

It's a comedy, so, though there are sad, very emotional, moments, you strangely feel like it's all one big joke and you sometimes just burst out laughing.

Like in "'Allo 'Allo! (1984-1992)", often it seems so silly, still funny, a farce. relaxed
