Discuss Law & Order

About a junkie from a wealthy family they find dead behind a dumpster. In this episode they mentioned how she was getting disability benefits (I'm assuming SSI) for being an addict. This must only be true in New York state because I'm certain in most states you can't get SSI disability for being an addict unless you have other ailments other than being a junkie or alcoholic.

I knew a guy in Texas that was getting SSI and he did use drugs and drink, but he got it by feigning paranoid schizophrenia. He would lie to doctor's and state social workers to convince them he was severely mentally ill.

Someone had even written a review on IMDb about this episode asking the same question, that if the $750 a month disability for being an addict in New York was true, because he wasn't getting that much on Social Security. I think at one time you may have been able to get SSI for being an addict because back in the early to mid 1970's I had an uncle who was an alcoholic and he was getting money from some type of government source (this was in Louisiana), but I'm certain they don't do this anymore.
