Discusión Penny Dreadful

S3 E6 No Beast So Fierce Halfway through the episode Dorian Gray interrupted the ballroom dancing lessons Lily was giving the whores she and Dorian had saved from the wicked abuse of their previous lives. The first girl they saved, Justine, displays contempt toward Dorian Gray, which is very curious given that he 1- saved her from death, 2- helped her to get her revenge upon the man who had severely abused her, and 3- has been exceedingly gracious and generous toward her, and quite patient as well. Dorian tells Lily that Justine doesn't know her place (that of a guest and the recipient of food, shelter, protection, clothing, etc. with nothing asked in return). Lily answers that Justine feels the same about him.

Dorian challenges that, reminding Lily that he and Lily are equals who share immortality. Then Lily tells Dorian

"She has the heart of me. The very heart of who I was before I was this. She has the anger, and the hate, and the loss."

"And are you no more than that?" Dorian asks.

"Sometimes that is all I am." Lily replies.

MOST of the time that is all she is. And all she wants to be. She doesn't want to let go of her anger, her hate, and her loss. Those are not temporary emotions for Lily. They are her identity and she doesn't want that to change. Lily is the epitome of toxic feminism, women hating men because they are men, women who embrace their suffering, & keep their wounds open and raw, preventing healing. When Victor told Lily he could take away her anger and pain, she told him she didn't want to be rid of her anger and pain.

Not only that, Lily wants all the women she has helped save from their wretched lives to focus on, to feed and grow their own feelings of anger, hate, and loss. They don't simply want revenge against the specific people who wronged them, but against all men. And Lily leads them in this as the head cheerleader. Justine is so driven by it, is so fanatical about this man hating religion, that she wants to kill Dorian Gray, the person who has helped her more than anyone in her life. She is so sick with this angry, hateful, vengeful illness that she cannot feel the slightest bit of gratitude toward him.

Lily says "I remember every man who ever used me. Every filthy alley, every cruel bastard who hurt me and bent me to submission." She goes on about her shame, debasement, and loss. She tells Dorian that he can't know that pain, but those whores can, because "it's who they are".
[It isn't something they experienced, it is who they are!]

It is true that Lily's previous life was awful, and the saved whores' lives were awful. And it takes time to emotionally heal from such trauma. But there is something absolutely sick about holding on to those negative emotions, about refusing to want to feel better, about identifying your very self as all those negative emotions. Look at Justine; not only didn't she feel the slightest bit of gratitude toward Dorian, she expressed contempt and hatred toward him. Because as Lily put it, that's who she is.

Dorian wants to help Lily get better and tries to help her, but Lily is stubborn about wanting to stay sick, and ultimately he gives up on Lily and turns her over to Frankenstein who believes he can cure her. He also threw out the ungrateful, hateful, whores. There was a shocked look on Justine's face when Victor told her she had to leave. What? How dare he tell her she could not live in his house!

Victor is a bit of a pussy though. He is a dorky virgin infatuated with the first girl he has ever had a chance with (because he created her) and he gives in to her pleading not to take away her feelings of loss, heartbreak, angry depression, and hatred.
