Is This the Male Version of Girls?

By this, I mean an unconventional looking lead man in relationships with women who most would consider out of his league. Lena Dunham has taken a lot of flack for her paring herself with more attractive actors on her show. A LOT! Yet isn't this the same exact situation? We live in a very shallow world and I admit I catch myself seeing what I would call an "odd" couple and wonder how that happened? Not proud of this but just being truthful.
I have done the same thing with Girls and the same thing with this show... Even though I know it does happen in real life, I do find it a distraction, esp on this show. On Girls, it is not so much Hannah's looks but her personality that I find off putting but the show is so well written I can give this bit a pass.
While on this show its both his looks and personality I find off putting. I just don't believe that he would even be on the radar of the two women he pairs up with the first season. Though I watched the 1st season I've not gotten past the 1st episode of the 2nd season yet because of this. I guess my ability to suspend any level of disbelief is getting weaker as I get older, LOL.

Yeah that is shallow of you, but I know what you mean. Paul Rust is a little too awkward, but I imagine that's supposed to be part of the fantasy- that a nerd can be with a hottie if she's flawed enough. The viewer's feeling of disbelief might be the show's intention at first, until you see them get comfortable with each other. The show does get better in Season 2! Episode 5 is when they feel believable to me.
I've never seen Girls, but my guess is the unlikely pairing in this show is meant to be believable because she's an addict and he's a "good guy". She likes his dorkbutt and trustworthiness, and he likes her vulnerability and adventurous side. They both have character flaws, but you see them overcome their flaws only to find new ones. I thought it was interesting, even if not entirely relatable. Is it a similar situation in Girls? Does Lena Dunham's character seek out a flawed model-type?
This show makes me love Claudia O'Doherty. She's so charming!!! The Bertie character makes me sad though. She can do much better than the big unemployed layabout.
