Quite enjoyable and a question about the pirates

Last year I watched an episode and a half, and couldn't quite get into it. Last week I decided to give the show another shot and I'm almost done with the second season. So, I'm kind of hooked now.
I know nothing about pirates. Does the show use events that actually (more or less) happened in the story lines (a bit like Vikings) or is it purely fictional? Seems like some of the pirates actually existed.

It's purely fictional, but some of the characters - as you've noticed - take their names from real pirates. It's a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, Treasure Island.

Some of these events took place i believe but the how and why are a bit different.
