The Blacklistについてのディスカッション

Yeah, this is an old episode. I am rewatching the series on Netflix presently and just watched that scene in which Aram hacked into the electronic avionics system of a helicopter flown by an environmental terrorist bent on causing a meltdown of a nuclear reactor on the Hudson River, a disaster which will ultimately cause the deaths of millions of people.

With less than a minute before the copter would reach the nuclear plant Aram has figured out how to kill the power to the main rotor which will disable the helicopter and cause it to crash into the woods before it can cause the disaster. Aram stops, thinking. Harold Cooper asks him "What's wrong?". Aram says "If I click on this, he'll die. I killed somebody once, and I can't take another life again." Cooper then reaches down and clicks the key causing power failure to the engine. The copter crashes, the nuclear plant is safe.

Aram looks at Cooper and says "I'm sorry."

Cooper replies "For what? You did your job. And then I did mine."

Later Aram and Samar speak. Aram is making small talk.

Samar says"You made the wrong call today."

Aram- I'm sorry you think so.

Samar- Is there anything else?

Aram- No that, that's it. ....Mr. Cooper understood.

Samar- He was just trying to make you feel better.

Samar was right. Honestly I don't know how Aram became an FBI agent at all. Why didn't they simply make him a civilian employee? The psychological testing should have washed him out; he should never have been made an agent.

This incident was black and white. The only way to save millions of people was to cut the power to that helicopter and let that terrorist pilot crash. But Aram couldn't make the right call. He could not cause the death of one terrorist in order to save the lives of millions of innocent people.

And he refused to acknowledge that he failed to make the correct decision. If the decision were left in his hands, Aram would have melted down emotionally and let that plant melt down as well.

How could the FBI issue a handgun to a person like that? How could they put him in a position (FBI agent) which could require him to use his rational mind to calculate and make the right decision when the use of lethal force is called for?

I can respect someone whose conscience won't allow them to take a life. But such a person should not apply for or accept a job in which they may be called upon to exercise the use of lethal force, a job in which it may be their duty to exercise lethal force in order to protect the public.

If his conscience will not allow him to do what is required to protect the public, he should resign as an agent and work as a civilian employee. Someone who can make the tough calls should fill his position.

Aram is a likeable character. But they really overdo some parts of his character, the peaceful nerdy dude. In one episode he jumped behind the wheel of a vehicle to chase after a van which had snatched Samar and then said "I can't drive". REALLY? He can't drive?!
