Discusión The Americans

Even though nobody died or was arrested, Phil and Liz had to sacrifice a lot to get out of the country, which was a lot worse. In leaving they had to give up the front travel business, they had to give up their home, they had to leave their Son, Henry, behind, which they thought was a better choice for him and lastly Paige decided to get off the train and stay behind, it seems she wanted to be close to her brother than her actual parents. At the end Liz and Phil had what they started with, each other. They did get some sort of mends with Stan, however I think his friendship for them and the obligation to take care of their son ultimately led his decision to let them go. In the end they lost everything they have gained, to include their children.

What was left on the table was the following:

  • Will Paige reunite with Henry? Which I think was the primary reason she got off the train, that and I think she lost respect for her parents, which has been building the
    last couple seasons.
  • Will Oleg get out of his jam? Maybe the CIA stepped in and helped him out or he turned over evidence that he was blackmailing Stan, who was sleeping with Nina, who
    was a Russian double agent
  • Will Phil meet his Russian son, who was brought up last season?
  • Is Stan's new girlfriend a Russian spy?
  • Will Stan become a Foster Parent to Henry?
  • Did Stan tell Henry that his parents were spies? He looked distraught when he was talking with Stan.

This Series almost needs another season or couple episodes to close things out. Maybe somewhere down the road this series will revisited to see what happens to the characters.

How good is Paige's new identity? Does it have a back story that will stand scrutiny? I doubt that she could withstand a background check, which would preclude the State Department, CIA, FBI, etc. She could go to Seattle, become homeless and live on the streets. But that wouldn't make much of a story.

If Renee, Stan's girlfriend, is a Russian spy a deep background test should reveal this and the FBI could feed her fake information.

It's the 1980's I am sure she was trained on how to acquire a new identity and establish a background, I am sure KGB provided her training on how to blend in, I think in the 80's, society was not a s security conscious as they are now, Having more security is a pre-911 thing, and even the FBI doesn't adhere to their own standards these days.

As mentioned - there are too many loose ends left dangling. Henry will be safe with Stan - but will Stan be safe with Renee? The seed of suspicion has been planted so odds are he will finish with her. Paige - well - Paige was a pain in the butt from start to finish - I found her conversion to a willing Mata Hari too swift and her conversion back to " disgusted - Washington" even swifter. But mysteriously she went back to the Soviet safe house - so does that mean that she intends to make contact with Claudia again? Another thing - if Elizabeth ruined a million years worth of work according to Claudia, why are they welcome back in Russia? I felt sorry for poor Oleg who ended up worse off than the whole lot of them and he didn't kill anybody - let alone goodness knows how many Philip and Elizabeth killed. I found it overdone with the smoking regarding Elizabeth - we didn't see a woodbine for five series then in season six she was a walking bonfire. I really enjoyed the series but I am old fashioned in my desire to see cold blooded killers punished accordingly. Oh - and before I go - wouldn't it be fun if Elizabeth and Philip (aka Clark) bumped into Martha in the empty shelved supermarket one day !! "He's my husband" - " no, he's not - he's mine" thumps Martha over the head with a cabbage !!!

I have mixed feeling. Of course as charismatic anti-heroes you get to grow fond of Philip and Elizabeth. I dreaded the thought that they would be killed or imprisoned, and honestly bought the red herring about the cyanide necklaces. So, in that sense, I was glad they got away. But then I have to think about all the lives they absolutely ruined not to mention all innocent people they flat out murdered. Philip and Elizabeth really are villains and terrible people. The fact that they lost their children to America might be poetic justice, but it's hardly full justice. They really didn't pay for their many, many crimes.

Also, I wished that we got a flash forward to Philip and Elizabeth realizing what a waste it had all been as the USSR falls two years later.
