Discuss Project Runway All Stars

The good: My favorite was the graphic gray suit from the Australian. The lines on that jacket were amazing.

Second goes to the Mountie look. Yes it was literal but the proportions were spot on. The strong shoulder is back, I or so I've read.

Dmitri added just the right detail to avoid looking too peasant dress.

Seth Aaron's look was very Daryl Hannah in Blade Runner. One of my favorite films.

I was not a fan of Irina's look. Yes it had impact but I agree with Isaac, chicken costume at kids party. Worse, I didn't see her inspiration at all.

The bad:

I think I'm going to hate Django Eurotrash. He's just so fashion forward in that European way, doncha know, these judges just won't get him. His asymmetric skirt and weird white sleeve look were just strange.

Michelle should have been in the bottom. A glittery bolero over a very basic white muslin looking dress.

Anya does not belong here. She cannot design or sew anything but a flowy beach dress. Least deserving winner in show history.

Anthony got very lucky. There is no excuse for what he showed. He should have been eliminated.

Irina's wallaby design was really cute.

I don't know if a woman would wear it out for a night on the town, but it was definitely interesting.

I can't remember that one.

Irina made a yellow cape like top that she said was very NY. Sadly, I can't find any pics.

I remember now.

I wasn't a fan. The shape of the jacket seemed off. Not bottom material but not top either.

Okay, got cha!

Boy, what are we going to do if two PR air at the same time?? Bravo PR is due to air in March 14?

Too many shows, too little time.

That is true, but I always make an exception for PR, which is my favorite show. Well, that and Survivor.

Oh, I will watch both PR shows. I did not watch the recent season of survivor. First season missed since Rob vs. Russell. I might be done, too much manipulation of outcome, too many gimmicky twists. I heard something about an Idol Nullifier? Wtf?

David and Goliath was blah. I didn't like it. It was the same Survivor that focussed on a nerd who talked too much. There was one villain that they voted off too soon. After she left, they didn't have enough interesting characters. However, the idol nullifier was cool, and it was used to perfection.

We found this episode interesting. As cosplayers we often use metallic fabrics. They are very tricky. Beyond that they are often difficult to sew, it is very easy to overuse them. As cosplayers (we actually don't like that term. We are old school and prefer costumers, hence my username) it is often a sign of a novice to overuse metallics and satins. After all, they're shiny.

That's not to say a large part of a look can't be in metallic fabric, as we saw this episode.

We really liked Sean's winning look. We are not normally fans of salman as a color, but he made it sing. The fringe skirt was a risk, but we thought it went very well. We disagreed with the one guest judge's opinion that it should have been shorter. In our view it would have looked top-heavy if the skirt had been short.

Irina and Biddell's were not memorable for us. We can't argue with Anya's elimination, though Michelle's did not work for us either. Those horizontal stripes just are not good in a metallic fabric and that weird scooped hem was just bizarre.

We were amused that Dmitry was still bringing up Michelle using "his" technique. Techniques don't belong to anyone. Even design lines are difficult for anyone to claim. Almost everything has been done at one time or another. The trick to originality is how you combine technique with color and fabric in interesting ways.

Do you wear the costume and act out as a certain character, or do you just make costumes? To me, cosplayers are those who wear and act in costume. Costumers make costumes but not act in them. Well. . . that's my unsolicited definition.

To me, it wasn't like an Oscar red carpet look. I liked it but I didn't love it.

Irina's dress I would wear, and it totally look Oscar red carpet to me. I love when the contestant go way and out and give up an extravagant ball gown. I hate the short cuts that are really formal wear but not red carpet like Sean's dress.

He needs to shut up! Does he not remember when he totally copied another person's design?

We do both, in a matter of speaking. A little history might be in order.

Costuming and Cosplay derives from Science Fiction Conventions. The tradition of costume and masquerade dates back to the First World Science Fiction convention in 1939. The Worldcon (the usual abbreviation) has featured them since. Most other SF conventions have adapted them since.

For most of that time the participants have been called costumers. According to the story (possibly apocryphal) is that a Japanese fan attending the Worldcon in 1984 (commonly called LACon II. Yeah, I know; a whole bunch of pseudonyms here) saw the costumes in the hall (that would be people wearing costumes during the day to panels, concerts and to the dealer's room and art show. Some staying strictly in character, some partially, and some not at all) and the formal masquerade. He went back home and enthusiastically told other Japanese fans about it. According to the story there is no Japanese word for masquerade. (I am not testifying to the accuracy of that statement. Please don't pull out a word for me except for information.) He therefore called it costume play or Cosplay.

Eventually, this word migrated back to the US, mostly for anime conventions. (Anime can be considered a branch of the SF/Fantasy family, though some would deny it. I don't). This usage caught the popular imagination, particularly the media, so the word has migrated into the generic SF convention world.

A quick word about the word masquerade. In the context of SF conventions it is not a party where people wear costumes. A masquerade is formal, staged costume competition. Contestants create their costumes and present them on stage. These presentations involve choreography, lights and sound to the extant allowed or available to the venue. Typically some presentations are short; a minute or less is typical. I call it Haiku Theater (that is just my term. Some of my friends and acquaintances use it, but it is in no way official or widespread.)

My wife and I have been active in the costumers community since 1983. With modesty, we have some prominence in the field. We, being old school, prefer the word costumer. That is not to imply any inferiority or illegitimacy to the term cosplay.

If you would like to see what my wife and I do, I would normally refer you to the International Costumers' Guild website gallery. Unfortunately the gallery is currently unavailable while we find new software. The old software we were using has been falling frequently. However, you could google me under Pierre Pettinger. Or my wife under Sandy Pettinger. We are a team and both of us design, sew and otherwise create our pieces.

This was an interesting runway. I don't love metallic usually, but they came through.

The only look that really didn't work for me was Michelle. She is lucky to still be here.

I didn't hate Anya's but I am not sad to see her go. She seems like a nice person but she is out of her depth and she knows it.

Dmitri made the same dress again. I agree, he should shut up about "his" technique. He does not have it copyrighted.

Irina's dress was beautiful but boy was that slit high. She is really circling vulgar with everything she has done.

I liked the white pantsuit for the Cannes film Festival. Perfect.

Wasn't Danica a great guest judge?

I'm sorry the more I look at the winning look, the more I hate it. Plus, it's not even sexy.

You know, I agree. He said it was for Met Gala red carpet, which I dont see at all. The jacket is oddly proportioned and too heavy for the fringe skirt. More fringe. I do like the color but that's about it.

Yeah, I like the color. I even like the construction of the jacket, but it's no way red carpet just because it sparkles a bit.
