Just saw this 1965 episode today. "The opposition" tried to hire Paul Drake away from Perry. Paul declined, but gave the guy his card and said something like, that when this is over, call me if you have other work. Drake said he charged $100 a day plus expenses. I found it interesting to compare to Stuart Bailey from 77 Sunset Strip, who went solo in its last season, 1963-1964. Bailey thought $50 dollars a day was good money. But then look at the dump he downsized into, after leaving "the Strip!"

Starting 9 years later, Jim Rockford charged $200 a day, plus expenses.
Rockford started 45 years ago? Damn, I'm old!

Was Paul Drake undercharging? Or was Jim Rockford overcharging? If Paul charged $100 per day the whole run of the series, starting in 1957, then maybe almost 20 years later, Rockford is justified in charging $200. Maybe that means Paul should have increased his price over time? But then Jim didn't really change his either. As I recall, even in the follow-up movies he was still charging $200 a day, plus expenses.

Wow.
And then there's Matlock, who charges $10,000 per case although at times he volunteers his services for widows and orphans or whenever he or one of his daughters or other staff gets kidnapped.
Fletcher, on the other hand, does not take the money, but she helps to solve cases for dinner and entertainment unless one of her nieces, nephews, distant relatives or dear old friends get falsely accused of murder, and then she goes as far as to skip lunch.
Marple also does her sleuthing for the curiosity of the adventure although she enjoys the suspense of keeping everybody else guessing even when she takes more than an hour to fit the pieces altogether.
