They filed a motion to overturn the guilty verdict because of new evidence.

I had no idea that was even possible. I thought the only way to do that was with an appeal.

I'm not sure but I think you can file an appeal too but that means a retrial and would take forever. In this case the new evidence was so excruciating that the judge had no choice but to go for leniency.

I doubt it is possible in real life, or at least it would take far longer to play out. Especially considering she didn't go to trial, but instead plead guilty. They even mentioned her not being able to appeal if she plead guilty in the initial episode.
