Shinichiro is a student living in what would be a dream come true for most high school boys, but for him is mostly a frustration. A well liked girl in school named Hiromi has lived in his house for a year along with his family. Her father was a close friend of the family, and when he died they immediately took her in. She is popular and well liked, always smiles, is talented in sports- but Shinichiro knows there must be tears inside her. Having an artistic tendency, he makes watercolours of her and thinks about wishing to ease her tears. Yet he cannot bring up the nerve to talk to her even in his own home. She, too, is quiet and withdrawn in their house, quite unlike at school. Shinichiro is also distracted by teasing from his friend Nobuse for watching Hiromi from afar, a curse of bad luck from a strange girl named Noe, and being forced to perform Muhiga dancing. By helping Noe he hopes to ease his own problems, yet he seems to have difficulty helping himself.

Shinichiro est un étudiant qui tente d’écrire une pièce en s’inspirant de son entourage. Un ami de son père étant mort l’année dernière, sa famille a pris sous tutelle sa jeune fille Hiromi qui se trouve être dans la même classe que Shinichiro. Ce dernier est attiré par elle et tente de comprendre pourquoi en sa présence, celle-ci reste renfermée sur elle-même. Cette attention particulière qu’il lui porte entraîne une certaine jalousie de la part de sa mère qu’il ignore complètement. Alors qu’il se ballade autour de son lycée, il fait la connaissance de Noe une jeune fille spéciale qui sépare les gens en deux catégories : ceux qui peuvent voler et ceux qui ne le peuvent pas. Au fil du temps, Shinichiro se rapproche d’elle et devient en quelque sorte son animal de compagnie, apprenant par la suite que Noe tente de « retrouver ses larmes ». Cette nouvelle fréquentation semble cependant déranger les sentiments de Hiromi.

Nakagami Shinichirou ist der einzige Sohn eines Sake-Brauers. Er lebt zusammen mit seinen Eltern und seiner Klassenkameradin Yuasa Hiromi, die nach dem Tod ihrer Eltern von Shinichirous Familie adoptiert wurde (beide Väter waren miteinander befreundet). Hiromi hat es allerdings schwer in dieser Familie, denn sie wird von ihrer neuen Mutter nicht akzeptiert. Shinichirous Traum ist es, Hiromis Tränen zu trocknen, doch das in letzter Zeit auffallend abweisende Mädchen scheint unerreichbar für ihn. Der Junge lässt seine Träume in sein geheimes Hobby einfließen ‒ er will Bilderbuchautor werden und hat ohne das Wissen seiner Eltern bereits erste Versuche bei einem Verlag eingereicht.

Als er am darauffolgenden Tag die Schule verlässt, entdeckt er in der Nähe des Hühnerstalls der Schule im Geäst eines Baums ein Mädchen, das kurzerhand auf ihn herabspringt (um weicher zu landen) und ihn rasch in ein Gespräch verwickelt ‒ über die Träume der Hühner fliegen zu können.

La storia ruota attorno a Shinichiro, un ragazzo con la passione del disegno che vive a casa con i suoi genitori e, da un anno a questa parte, con Hiromi, una ragazza che ha perso il padre. A Shinichiro piace Hiromi, ma la timidezza e il carattere taciturno e riservato della ragazza, gli impediscono di rivelarle i propri sentimenti. Un giorno a scuola, mentre si preoccupa di come risolvere questa situazione, Shinichiro incontra una strana ragazza allegra e solare, Noe, e da quel momento l’amore nei confronti di Hiromi comincerà a vacillare.

True Tears conta a história de um estudante chamado Shinichiro com muitas capacidades artísticas. Ele vive com a sua mãe, pai e com Hiromi Yuasa, que passou a viver na casa de Shinichiro desde que o pai dela morreu. Em casa Hiromi actua de uma forma fria mas Shinichiro não tem coragem de falar com ela. Na escola, Hiromi é popular, e é talentosa nos esportes, mas Shinichiro sabe que ela esconde algumas coisas e que as mantém apenas para si mesma. Shinichiro conhece uma estranha garota na escola chamada Noe Isurugi que lhe deseja má sorte na vida. Depois de ter má sorte com algumas coisas, ele reconcilia-se com Noe e descobre que ela "abriu mão de suas lágrimas".
