It's a race against time to identify the cause of a deadly virus, spreading rapidly and headed straight for the city. It's up to NorBAC to identify patient zero and contain the outbreak. As if a deadly virus wasn't enough, NorBAC's Chief Scientist, David Sandström must deal with the unexpected arrival of his belligerent teenage daughter, Lilith, and arguments with NorBAC's Executive Director Caroline Morrison over the security clearance of the one member of his team he'll need the most, his top virologist.

David Sandström ist Molekularbiologe und wissenschaftlicher Leiter des NorBac, eines Forschungsinstituts in Toronto, das sich unter anderem mit der Früherkennung von Epidemien beschäftigt. Ihm zur Seite stehen die Mitglieder seines Teams, Carlos Serrano, Mayko Tran, Hira Khan und Bob Melnikov, sowie die Geschäftsführerin, Caroline Morrison. Das Team wird mit einer unbekannten Krankheit konfrontiert, die immer mehr Tote fordert und vermutlich ein Virus zur Ursache hat. Dieses zeigt Kennzeichen von Ebola und von Kamelpocken, eigentlich eine unmögliche Mischung. David erkennt, dass es sich um ein künstlich hergestelltes Virus handeln muss. Ein Wettlauf gegen die Zeit beginnt. Aber das ist nicht Davids einziges Problem: Seine Tochter aus geschiedener Ehe ist auf Besuch und will sogar bei ihm einziehen. Das Verhältnis ist nicht ohne Spannungen. Und dann ist da noch Mick, ein Junge, der ihn auf Schritt und Tritt verfolgt und behauptet, ein Klon zu sein.
