Discuss Sister Wives

I don't know if any of you plan to watch this but I encourage you to do so. This was actually filmed by a British film crew a couple of years ago and was aired on a UK TV station. I actually watched it before, but plan to watch it again. Rather than being reality TV it is shot in documentary form and is only a few episodes. The Foster family lives about 30 miles south of me. I have known them for almost 25 years. Hopefully TLC won't try to turn this into a regular series. The Fosters are an awesome family, much like Joe Darger's family. I loved it when the Dargers told TLC to shove it.

One of the reasons that I like the Fosters and the Dargers is that they are the ones that are really publicly fighting the polygamy fight in Utah at the grass roots level. They know Utah isn't going to put them in jail, or to take away their land. They know Utah will only fight polygamy on the grounds of when other crimes are committed. While they fight for the end to the criminalization of polygamy, it is still against the law Federally. Utah laws don't mean shit as long as polygamy is outlawed nationally.

Yes, the Browns filed suit against Utah and lost, but it wasn't because of what was explained on the show. They filed a suit against the State of Utah and the Supreme Court found there wasn't a problem created by the State because the Browns opted to move to another state. There wasn't a violation of their civil rights. The State of Utah has not taken legal action against anyone, just because they were polygamists, since the raids in the 1930's. The last time the Federal Government did raids concerning polygamy was in 1889. In 1890 the Mormon Church issued the Mormon Manifesto which ended the sanctioning of polygamy. In 1896 Utah became a State. The Feds ended their fight with the State of Utah, who then, unfortunately, had to fight the offshoots of the Mormon Church that still believed in polygamy.

Unless the State of Utah or the Federal Government arrests someone simply because of being a polygamist, there isn't a need for the Supreme Court to intervene.

Were most of the houses built in the 90's then?

Most were built in the 90's, and a few even more recently. The Morrison house is the most impressive. But he also has two wives with really good jobs, they take home a lot of money. Plus he is a contractor and makes a lot of money.

The houses are nice & I noticed they had some nice furniture. I don't remember if they've talked about it, but I figured the wives had good jobs.

I see Enoch and one of his wives driving a rural route mail delivery almost every day. One of Morrisson's wives works at my bank, and the other one works as a nurse at the hospital.

Just finished episode 4. Is that the last one?

I am an agnostic, never married and no kids. I have nothing in common with this group except that my family is close.

I have to say, I think these people have something beautiful. Living sustainably, communally, raising happy, healthy children, supporting each other.

Watching the Browns, and now this group, has completely changed my opinion on this issue. I think they are right that the abuses in some of these groups result because of the secretiveness that illegality brings. These people should not be treated as criminals.

I liked every part except the near passing off of the dead brother's wives to the living brother. I know they wanted to keep the family together, and I understand that. Still, sloppy to have brother-cousins.

Yes, passing off the dead brothers wives felt like part of an inheritance. Creepy. But it does have biblical roots in the Jewish Old Testament Levirate Law. That seems to be how they live these things. The important thing is that, unlike Jeffs and his ilk, the women can choose.

Off topic, but some of these wives are very attractive, like the widow sister wife, who decided to find her own man.

Then, the husband to ONE wife for 18 years is hot too.

That's the only reason I watched it - the one hot husband. joy

I think all three of the patriarch husbands are good looking. The one with 3 wives is too much of a doofus and his brother is a complete tool. Enoch's two wives are both very attractive.

Makes you wonder why Kody couldn't land better-looking wives. Even Meri was shocked he was interested in her, but I think current Meri is attractive and is looking the best out of the wives.

superficial I know but. . .

You should read what these women say on another forum about Sister Wives. They rip them to shreds - never a good thing & the one particular thread I get emails about is Janelle & they are brutal about everything she does.

I think Meri looks exactly like what she's been through. She was really pretty when they got married & adorable when the show started, but she's been through a lot. I think Christine looks the best. She definitely looks better than when they got married. She did a good thing with that wedding dress.
