I think Catherine was the right woman for him, but too much has happened for them to go back imo. I agree with what Alex said. The writers would have to come up with something pretty good to explain why she'd lie to him like she did. I'd like to see Cath back on the show though. I liked her character.
Nothing against Lynn, she's perfectly nice, but I just don't see any chemistry there. It's awkward to watch.
About Catherine lying, isn't history going to repeat itself? His mother, Doris, lied to his father about her secret life. If or when they marry, will she also disappear by dying in an accident and leaving Steve behind with their children?
Cath would have to leave the CIA for them to have any chance of getting back together. Steve's seen it all with his mother, he's not going to put himself in the same position his father found himself in. Like I said before, the writers would have to come up with something pretty good otherwise Steve will look like a fool for taking her back again.
I get the feeling PL still sees Cath as Steve's endgame. I know we should take his cryptic tweets with a grain of salt but, with him saying "nothing is dead" with regards to McRoll, and also saying that he doesn't see Lynn in Steve's future, that pretty much points to one thing.
Joining the CIA was a big mistake of Catherine. She did it for her country, but was it worth it. As we know from Doris: No one ever leaves the CIA. Ultimately, to protect her family Doris had to fake her death.
Perhaps the writer will create a situation similar to that in NCIS Los Angeles: Sam Hanna (Special Agent NCIS) is married to Michelle (CIA agent) and they both have their secrets. They have two children and between missions they get to be a family.
The strongest attraction appeared to be with Catherine in the first season but not so much now. In one of interviews with Alex, it sounded like he decided in his mind that the romantic relationship with Catherine had moved on. The chemistry was there on the first date on the island and looked promising but not in the three episodes since the first. I think the search is on to see if he finds someone new!

I go with Catherine anyday. I know, she has many haters but I think she was by far the best girl for Steve.
