Because the show needed a villian would be my best guess.

Personality disorder?

Sociopath?

That yeah. Indicated by an unshakable need to win and no real relationships with anyone.

I'm actually binge watching OTH right now. I'm in season 9 and almost done with the series. I plan on posting my thoughts on the series when I officially finish.

But onto Dan. He's honestly my favorite character. And I don't think that because he was some great person. I think that because he is just so great to watch. For me, he stole the show. I think he was unhappy in the beginning because he never achieved all he wanted and felt cheated in life. Then he was unhappy after he got out of prison because he realized that he had a pretty good life but ruined it all.

Think nothing could make him happy, there maybe things he think he can but when he gets to them no.

Like to think he suffered from a narcissistic or borderline personality disorder.

He had a good life but just couldn't experience it.

Because Dan was an arrogant SOB who was both mad at himself and pretty much everyone else for his not making it big in professional basketball.

Angry at Whitey for making him sit out and miss out on leading the Ravens to the state championship

Angry at his brother keith for their imperfect relationship

Angry at Karen for not having the abortion

and angry at Nathan for not playing the game the way he wanted him to all the time.

With that being said though he's one of the most well written villains I've ever seen on a tv show.

Dan was a terrible person but a very interesting character to watch. He was the main reason why I decided to watch OTH in the first place. I heard about his character from others and decided to check it out for myself. I’m glad I did because I loved his journey. Even at his worse a part of me still liked him. I loved his redemption arc and time after prison the most.

He need not be angry at Keith since it was obvious that Dan was his parents favorite.
