Discuss Star Trek

On again today, on H&I. They really should have at least offered their cure to the Scalosians. Even if it turned out not to work for them.

Yes, Shatner was one of the few people to support Freiberger.

His acting was decent. If the script was bad, he would overact, which at least made the show interesting to watch.

Nimoy wined about his character. Roddenberry bailed figuratively. Justman bailed literally. Marc Daniels and Joseph Pevney had enough of the crap. Jerry Finnerman left as soon as he got another offer. Gene Coon submitted some crap scripts. D.C. Fontana got POed because her scripts were mangled and demanded her name get left off of them.

Shatner, though, bravely kept on bringing home the ham all the way to Turnabout Intruder.

One of Shatner's moments I appreciated in Wink of an Eye:

Kirk drinks the coffee and goes into the Dutch angle world. He looks around. The first stranger he sees is a beautiful woman.

He smiles ever so briefly. This is an enemy he knows how to deal with and he will enjoy it.

The smile is brief. He proceeds to go into "all business" mode, not allowing himself to succumb to her obvious charms until he has done his sabotage.

The brief smile is a great Shatnerian touch.

Hey Sukhisoo good to see you back again. beers

Thank you, Nexus.

You're welcome Sukhisoo how are the TNG reviews coming along? although I read that you had spend time in hospital so I hope you're doing well. Have you read Mark Cushman's third part(third novel) of These Are The Voyages Sukhisoo since you know about Shatner's increasing involvement in the production of the third season?

When Kirk and Carol Marcus had David, he wasn't apparently on deep space duty. And they were serious, at least then. For Miramanee, he had two months with her. It's not difficult to believe that the birth control injections are a regular thing, and wear off. (Near the end of Deep Space Nine, it's revealed that Captain Sisko apparently knocked up Captain Yates after he missed his MONTHLY injection.)

@I don’t deny they were living an intense period but we all know that Kirk and Marcus were 100% career driven ..so I exclude categorically that either wanted a baby at that point despite their deep feelings for each other.

This birth control injection is mentioned only in DS9 which is set some 120 years (I’m being generous here) after Kirk and Co.

There is no reason to believe that during the five year mission this birth control injection was available.

If it would have been available Kirk would have used it …so even if what ever Marcus used failed they still would have had a back up and would have been covered for unwanted pregnancies.

So , your argument concerning Mirmanee also fall apart too. Her getting pregnant had nothing to do with a birth control injection wearing off.

...hence one can not exclude categorically also that Deela did not fall pregnant after having sex with Kirk..

Q.And in addition, knocking up the queen of an arguably dangerous alien race, seems like a very big violation of the Prime Directive.

@What ever it took , saving the Enterprise and its crew was imperative ..Kirk had to get word back to Starfleet and warn other passers-by about this race and their hidden scheme to lure ships and crew to their planet to exploit them.

Once their true intentions were revealed ships would stay clear...They were not much of a race anymore ..just three individuals more than the last of the Mohicans .

@Nexus71

I am about halfway through the 3rd season right now. I have some opinions on some of the episodes, so I may as well post them by and by. I'm liking most of the stories, but get occasionally frustrated by the show's reliance on technobabble to solve problems.

I'm doing reasonably well health-wise. I just have a bad habit of trying to exercise like I'm still in my twenties.

Yes, I did recently re-read These are the Voyages. The first two were better in that he seems to have had a lot more memos available for research. The third book seems to rely more on anecdotal evidence from old fogeys with suspect memories. Still, more than one interviewee indicated that Shatner was very involved in the third season. Often, naturally, to the consternation of the supporting cast who got some of their lines stolen.

Another interesting book is The Fifty Year Mission. Stories about production are told from multiple points of view and are often filtered through egotistical lenses. It illustrates how difficult it is to get facts about the past, but people certainly do yield unintentional insights into their personalities.

. Often, naturally, to the consternation of the supporting cast who got some of their lines stolen.

Yeah I kinda figured that that was the moment were the beef between the supporting cast (Takei)and Shatner started but from what I have read I kind of understand Shatner's behaviour around that time. There was the constant fear of being cancelled,Shatner was in the middle of a divorce plus having to take care that others did not entirely screw up the third season plus having to learn his dialogues can put some strain on a man, that thinking about his co-stars feelings wasn't exactly on the top of his mind. And I tend to think that some of the cast were overplaying their importance since they were only supporting cast in all fairness it were Nimoy,Shatner and Deforest who were the main focus of the series so I can understand that Shatner would have invested more attention to these three characters.

Well there are birth control injections NOW, but those were unknown at the time of TOS being made. And it seems that Kirk and Carol Marcus were more serious at first, then split up later because they couldn't reconcile their careers. It wouldn't be so far outside the realm of possibility, considering also that such things happen NOW too, that they made a mistake.

My biggest point there, though, is that Kirk and Miramanee had TWO MONTHS together. Kirk and Deela apparently had sex ONCE. And again, while conception after one time is POSSIBLE, it is also RARE. "Only" 30% of couples achieve a pregnancy in the first MONTH, IF they're having sex REGULARLY, meaning every 2 or 3 days. So Deela getting pregnant from that one time, is very unlikely.

But remember, Starfleet personnel are expected to sacrifice themselves and the whole ship and crew, rather than violate the Prime Directive. (Except when Plot dictates otherwise.)

Once their true intentions were revealed ships would stay clear...They were not much of a race anymore ..just three individuals more than the last of the Mohicans .

There were more than 3 Scalosians. Rael said there were 5, but he might have been lying. (Not that it really matters, but the idea of a whole "nation" being less than 1 million, according to Rael, strains credibility.) At any rate they only had to keep other ships away for maybe a few months at most, at which point all the remaining Scalosians would have died of old age. Of course that was perhaps the single biggest problem with the whole episode: if they didn't have alien ships visiting at least every couple WEEKS already, before the Enterprise got there, there wouldn't have been any Scalosians left to start with.

See Sunshine now look what you have done. yum

I have always been my worse enemy, Nex. 😐

I won't hold it against you Sunshine kissing_heart and besides it takes two to tango.
