@Actually I find it impossible that Spock would have left his device on the table . Spock would never be "sloppy " in any situation, mission or other.

It happened because the writers needed it to happen for the plot.

How long has it been since you saw "Turnabout Intruder", Sukhi?. To quote Nomad, "Your facts are uncoordinated". I just re-watched the teaser to make sure I wasn't mistaken. Kirk didn't allow her to do anything. As she feigned delirium, he was taking a close look at the life entity transfer device (obviously not knowing what it was) when she activated something that seemed to stun him. It is rather vague as to exactly what she activated and why it stunned him, but he was unconscious when she started the transfer. Ergo, he did not allow it. Why would he let her do the transfer in the first place? Then awaken in her body and act as if he didn't know what had happened? No offense, but your goof citation is invalid.

Spock tried to divert the asteroid, but Enterprise wasn't powerful enough to do it. Even if Kirk had made the attempt before going to the planet, the outcome would have been the same.

Seems like they waited at least several hours before going to the asteroid, because of looking for Kirk, and strained the engines etc to get there quickly. And without that strain/damage, it can be argued they would have been successful. The logical conclusion is that they "knew" they would be successful if they were not delayed with the resulting damage to the ship. Those problems can be blamed for the particular difficulty they had. But it was also, Because Plot. (And how were they supposed to be able to go back to the planet at sub-light traveling for WEEKS without running out of fuel? There was no other time I can think of, when that was possible. Certainly not in The Doomsday Machine, for example.)

I had the same line of thought as Knixon( historic event , we agree on something)

Initially the plan was simply to DIVERT the asteriod and the fact that they stopped to have a look at the planet would indicate that they were confident that it would be a no-fuss, routine mission .

This is Spock's first log entry . Captain's log, stardate 4843.6. First Officer Spock commanding. We've been en route to the asteroid for several hours. Our delay on the planet's surface has made it imperative that we proceed at maximum warp speed for a period which exceeds the recommended safety margin.

Kirk's search party was quite long so when they finally arrived at the diverting point the dilithium crystals circuits were in critical state, having travelled far too long at warp 9.

SPOCK [OC]: Full power, Mister Scott. SCOTT: The relays will reject the overload, Mister Spock! SPOCK: Then bypass the relays and go to manual control [Bridge] SCOTT [OC]: We'll burn out the engines! SPOCK: I want full power, Mister Scott. SCOTT [OC]: Aye, sir.

Scottie begged Spock to have the time to replace the delithium crystals but Spock said there was no time.

Spock was under pressure ...the dilithium crystal circuits were already under stress when Spock used the deflector beam and due to the enormous amount of power being drawn it burnt out and the plan failed.

Knowing that the natives and (above all ) Kirk's life were at stake ,in a desperate attempt , Spock tried to destroy the asteriod with photon torpedoes (?) but it was too large.

Alright. I surrender. You're both right. I'm wrong. However, I will not back up on my argument concerning "Turnabout Intruder".

Yes, there was expository dialogue at the beginning of The Paradise Syndrome that made it clear that the longer they waited to divert the asteroid, the harder it would be to do so. Kirk should have diverted it first before even beaming down.

I will stand partially corrected in the Turnabout Intruder issue. I should have done a better job of wording my position. Janice Lester tricked Kirk into being vulnerable enough that she could successfully operate her machine. Kirk should not have allowed her to do so, even though there really wasn't a way he could have known.

That doesn't even make sense, Sukhi. I will concede that, taking into account how Hellish his past relationship apparently was with her, Kirk may have goofed a bit by dropping his guard. However, by your own admission, he had no way of knowing the following.

1. The device he was looking at did what it did. Since, by expository dialogue, it is established that life entity transfer was unheard of.

2. That Janice had gone completely insane.

3. What she was planning to do or that Coleman was helping her do it.

4.That the deaths of the rest of the research team were a distraction to get McCoy away from Kirk so she cold make her move.

Bottom line; Kirk did make a slight mistake in dropping his guard. Nothing more.
