Up until the Thasians brought up they gave him his powers to survive and would never stop using them.

It's quite obvious after many years alone he would never learn how to cope living with humans.

Kirk was always willing to risk the safety of all humanity and even the entire galaxy, until that option was taken from him.

What was the alternative? Kirk had to try. He would never know if Charlie could have been reformed unless there was some attempt to restore his humanity.

I've always wondered why the Thasians couldn't simply take his powers away. He'd have a rough time adjusting to living among Humans, but at least he couldn't telekinetically hurt anyone.

Charlie was at an age where he can't be easily molded like a five year old and the temptation to use his powers is far too great as seen in the TNG episode Hide & Q.

Best guess he couldn't survive without them since he had been using them to keep himself alive for years by creating food, so taking them away would undo all that.

Agreed, difficult to mold, but not impossible. Therefore, Kirk still had to try.

What could they have possibly say that would make him cope any better? Compassion are taught at a very young age. It would've been too much of a risk to train.

If any of us had his powers we would use them no matter what, he will always be tempted to use them.

I figure the Thasians were correct about that - "He will use them. Always." - but there wasn't even a throw-away kind of line about why they couldn't be taken back. Once he was with other people again, he would no longer need to create food out of nothing, etc.

Gee, Knix I seem to recall mentioning that as well. grin Why couldn't the Thasains take the powers away?

Can't live without them since he'd been using them to survive.

They said "We offer him life"

Kirk just figured he needed to get laid, fix him right up

Another stray neuron: Couldn't Charlie create companions or even a whole community to live in?

laughing Amen, Casey! I don't think we've met. To quote Mr. Lincoln, "An honor to make your acquaintance, sir."

Well, a boink with Yeoman Rand would have done wonders for ME, that's for sure!
