Discuss Star Trek

With a nod to rudely_murray over at the Kevin Bacon thread, let's play 6 degrees of TOS! The rules: You name an actor, and the next poster has to link that actor to one of the Big 3 (Shatner, Nimoy, or Kelley) in as few moves as possible. Ideally 6 or less, hence, 6 degrees.

Example:

Player 1 names Bruce Lee.

Player 2 responds:

  1. Bruce Lee starred in Enter the Dragon with John Saxon.
  2. John Saxon starred in an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man with Lee Majors.
  3. Lee Majors starred with William Shatner when he guest starred in an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man.

Player 2 then names another actor to link to one of the Big 3.

Feature films or TV shows only. Try not to select names which would be too easy, like linking Shatner to Patrick Stewart is no challenge!

Okay, here goes...

First try: Marlon Brando.

I just finished watching the first two episodes of FireFly.

Glad to hear it has a decent ending .. I already have two favourites : Jane and Simon.

The crew members are an odd bunch, it seems they all have something to hide. I don't care for the gun shooting but I like how they interact.

I hope Jane doesn’t turn on the captain at sometime..they often don't see matters in the same way.

The sister is a mystery .. I wonder what's so special about her.

Glad you liked "Firefly". I hope you'll be able to see the sequel movie "Serenity (2005)" too.

I'm happy you suggested FireFly. Thanks! sunglasses

@sunshine62 Ciao. relaxed

You are missing two episodes in your list: "Serenity Part 1&2 (2002)" - that is the pilot episode for the television show, and not the sequel movie, which also was titled "Serenity (2005)" - and "Trash (2002)".

About the order of the episodes: here is a post.

Here is the link. It works now.

The pilot "Serenity (2002)" is usually broadcast as one long episode of 80 minutes. The other episode "Trash" comes before "The Message".

With your help , I'm watching the episodes in the proper order. For now ,I'm skipping the two part pilot because I have already seen The Train Job and Bushwhaked so I continues from there this afternoon .

I wanted to proceeded slowly but I have already seen up to Ariel when Jayne sells Simon and his sister to the authorities. I was disappointed he sold them out.

Other parts I enjoyed :

Jayne wanted to buy the girl..and the captain said "she has a name" and Jayne points out that his beloved machine gun also has one: Vera....in Our Mr. Reynolds

Simon and sister are kidnapped and then Simon decides to die with River at the stake in Safe.

After young guy saves Jayne, he attacks and kills his ex associate in Jahnestown. You could tell that Jayne was shaken and couldn't understand why anyone would do such an altruistic gesture in his regards.

Out of Gas ... Jahne put that gun in hiding, right ?

It's not as good as Babylon 5 but I do love how they interact and the mystery around River.

It is different from "Babylon 5" or "Star Trek", e.g. it's not the government and military as the protagonists, but rather rogue elements like the outlaw crew from Serenity on the borders of a new frontier and their adventures, and there are no aliens.

The pilot "Serenity (2002)" begins with five minutes of fighting between the Alliance and the Independents. Malcolm and Zoe are on the side of the Independents. The war is lost and they become outlaws. Then it jumps six years forward. Shepherd and Simon are taken on as passengers. River is a stowaway in Simon'a luggage. It's a full house now with crew and passengers together to begin their adventure.

A pity that there was only one season. This universe, the characters and their stories could not be explored further in other seasons.

The first episode I watched titled: The Train Job was longer than the usual episodes. The captain is on a battlefield and is encouraging others and saying no one will be left behind and then he asks for backup (i think) and they watch the mother ship take off, leaving them for dead.

A pity that there was only one season. This universe, the characters and their stories could not be explored further in other seasons

Personally, I don't think the series is worth another season.

I have watched 8 episodes now and I still don't feel emotionally attached to the captain, the married couple , the preacher or the girl engineer.

I don't like the Western setting because I'm not a big fan of westerns. And,I find the robbery jobs lame.

I'm watching because I love Jayne, he's a scoundrel but still redeemable. And I find him easy on the eye.

Simon's bond with his sister and the mystery around her keep me engaged. Once the cat is out of the bag, I don't want to see them just on the run episode after episode.

In the pilot when Simon comes aboard for the first time, he tells the crew why he and his sister are wanted by the Feds.

In The Train Job episode, we find out that Simon smuggled his sister aboard who is tranquilized and hidden in a capsule (?). When she is discovered Simon tells the crew that she is his sister River and they are on the run.

He rescued her from a facility run by the authorities. All he knows is that they hurt her and that she's now unstable.

Simon at that point had no idea what kind of experiments they were doing on her or why?

In Ariel, we found out that they cracked her skull more than once and were "working" on the part of the brain that allows us to suppress certain emotions.

I just saw War Stories and we get to see Kaylee terrified during an armed confrontation ................... River steps in, all calm and collected, takes her gun, and shoots three guards without even flinching.

Looks like the authorities were turning her into a killing machine ...so my question is : why did they choose River and not a soldier, the more obvious choice ?

"The Train Job" starts with Malcolm, Zoe and Jayne drinking in a bar. Then they get into a fight and escape with the ship. After the intro, you see River and Simon. Book and Malcolm are discussing River. The next scene is with Inara and Kaylee.

"Serenity" is about 80 minutes and "The Train Job" is about 45 minutes, so if your version of The Train Job" is a little longer and has the pilot included, then it should be about 125 minutes.

After "War Stories", you have the option of A or B - as described in the link - when watching the last four episodes.

Ciao wonder2wonder slight_smile ,

Sorry, I just finished watching season 1...I followed the list you gave me yesterday.

The train Job was 1.26 minutes .. so I saw the pilot without realising.

The Message. We get to see the captain and Zoe during the war. Jayne gets a letter from his mamma and the hat..I have two similar..one is different greens, and the other is rusty.

I really wanted to see the story arc of River move on instead nada.... eg. the Feds coming after her ... that was a disappointment. I thought you said it had a decent ending. disappointed_relieved

Heart of Gold , I like the brothel owner, sorry she died.

In Objects in Space, we get to see River has the ability to read minds ... I forgot she read the deaf girl's mind in "Safe" And, Jayne sleeps with an arsenal of guns.

In Trash, I was glad to see the captain's "wife" ended up being played..I didn't see that coming.

So I still have the film "Serenity to see that was made in 2005 ..I'll watch it tomorrow.
