若き行商人クラフト・ロレンスは、荷馬車を引く一頭の馬を相棒に、街から街へと商品を売り歩く日々を送っていた。ある日、黄金色の麦畑が広がる小さな村を訪れた彼は、耳と尻尾を有する美しい少女と出会う。「わっちの名前はホロ」自身を“賢狼”と呼ぶホロは、豊穣を司る狼の化身だった――。彼女の「遠く北にあるはずの故郷・ヨイツの森へ帰りたい」という望みを聞き、ロレンスとホロは北を目指す商売の旅の道連れとなる。だが行商人の旅には思いがけない波乱がつきもので……。孤独だった行商人と、孤独だった狼の化身を乗せた馬車が、今、騒がしく走り始める。
