P.C. Stamp is involved in a serious accident in which he kills a pedestrian while reversing the area car down a one-way street in response to a call for urgent assistance. Tensions are high as P.C.s Quinnan and Ashton offer differing accounts of the events leading up to the accident.

Boulton investigates when a young girl is approached and attacked on the way home from school. Her father, a property developer, has been having trouble with a gang involved in a pub protection racket. Unable to locate the prime suspect, Michael Hyde, Boulton poses as a competition representative to get the location from his wife. He and Carver travel up to Manchester on Hyde's trail. When they run into trouble at a local pub, they find themselves being rescued by none other than Frank Burnside, who left Sun Hill in mysterious circumstances five years ago. Burnside, who is actually undercover, tries to inadvertently help his former colleagues to find and capture Hyde, but the plan goes awry.

DCI Jack Meadows introduces new DS Claire Stanton to the rest of the CID team, who are jealous when she manages to land an eco-terrorism case on her first day. Someone has been injecting mercury into oranges as a protest against GM foods. Security footage shows a 'New Age' couple lurking around the fruit section, but when they are questioned, it appears they were stealing oranges rather than contaminating them. Supermarket shelf stacker Darren matches the description of the perpetrator, and when challenged, he incapacitates DC Proctor and takes him hostage. Locating his flat, the police find Proctor alive and well, but then word comes through that Darren is in the children's ward at St Hugh's armed with a gas grenade. SO19 arrive at the hospital, but DS Stanton manages to talk Darren into giving himself up.

DCI Burnside arrives to investigate a murder which looks like part of a series of male rapes gone too far. Andy Wilson, one of the previous victims remembers something about an angel when he was attacked. Following a statement from taxi driver Steve Sanderson, DC Holmes finds a man matching Sanderson's description on CCTV tapes: his name is Mark Angelis and he works for a courier service with an angel logo. Although DS Boulton arrests Angelis in possession of a knife, he insists it is for self defence against the rapist. DS Stanton visits a profiler at Scotland Yard, and later discovers that taxi driver Sanderson has made a similar statement to Stafford Row station. Stanton and Proctor visit Sanderson's wife, and discover evidence that he is the culprit. They call Burnside to tell him, but he's in the back of a cab - Sanderson's cab...

Northumbria Police arrest one 'Frank Bentley' with a boot full of drugs and a handgun, after a high speed car chase through Newcastle. 'Bentley' and his 'lawyer' Liz McAuley are actually DCI Frank Burnside and DS Liz Rawton on an undercover assignment to investigate corrupt CID officers in Newcastle. Their target is DCI Bonnet, who seems to be in collusion with local gangster Saul Anderson. Despite Burnside being threatened by Anderson, and Rawton's cover nearly being blown when she runs into her cousin Cheryl at a bar, Burnside manages to gain Bonnet's trust. When Bonnet and Burnside meet at a private club, they are shocked when the police raid the place, but manage to escape without being spotted or arrested.

Although they are undercover, Burnside agrees to let Liz Rawton visit her mother. Despite a close shave at a family gathering when her cousin's boyfriend turns out to be an associate of Saul Anderson, Rawton and Burnside survive with their cover intact. Burnside even takes part in a little karaoke! Burnside is not pleased when Customs seize a crateful of guns meant for Anderson that he was supposed to see through. Anderson is not pleased either, and takes Burnside for a little drive. Bonnet and Anderson turn against each other, and Anderson is shot. As Bonnet is about to shoot Burnside as well, armed police arrive and he ends up shooting himself.

Following the death of prime suspect Warren Askew in custody, Stanton urges Deakin not to close the case of Rachel Booker's murder immediately. A series of mysterious numbers found in Rachel Booker's diary are later revealed by Scotland Yard to be a set of number relating to a number of bank accounts. One of Rachel's fellow dancers, Lynette, is persuaded by Boulton and Stanton to tell them exactly what is going on. They soon discover that Vickery's, a fur export company owned by Howard Fallon and Ray Bazzini, is actually a front for a major money laundering operation. In an attempt to uncover further information, Stanton and Boulton go on a double date with Beech and his girlfriend, Maggie Lyons. When the case is subsequently turned over to the NCS, Stanton covertly photographs Beech meeting in secret with Fallon and Bazzini.

Stanton tries to find out if Boulton is working with Beech. When star witness Lynette resurfaces, they immediately hide her in a safe house, where she informs them that Ray Bazzini killed Rachel Booker. Beech informs Fallon the location of the safe house, but Lynette escapes from the thugs who are sent to attack her. As Stanton prepares to confess all to Boulton about her undercover op, he gets a phone call from Beech. They meet at a construction site, where Beech admits he has been working for Fallon, and reveals that it was him who gave up Lynette's location. He tries to convince Boulton to help him out, but an angry Boulton refuses, with the resulting fight ending in tragedy.

Don Beech turns up in Sydney, Australia, and almost immediately hooks up with Frankie Nguyen, a Vietnamese-Australian woman with contacts in Sydney's criminal underworld. Together, she and Beech engage in a ruthless crime spree and are soon wanted by the New South Wales Police, the Australian Federal Police, a rival Vietnamese gang and a ruthless and determined DI Claire Stanton, who has arrived to arrest Beech and extradite him to Britain for the murder of DS Boulton six months earlier. The chase comes to a head at a Sydney dock, and as Beech tries to make a getaway in his new boat, Stanton fires a shotgun after him, blowing up the boat and leaving Beech missing, presumed dead.

PCs Des Taviner and Gemma Osbourne complain about being taken off traffic duties, but Insp. Gina Gold assures them that after their dangerous car race, had they been civilians, they would now be serving time. But the Super has an even more humiliating plan in mind. TDC Kane and PC Cathy Bradford take over the investigation from Osbourne and Taviner when kids vandalise a local shop, but the old lady over the road who sees everything, takes them down an unexpected path - a path that may change her life. When Kane's ex-wife Tanya makes another appearance at the station, Cathy Bradford does her best to make life difficult. On quizzing Tanya's friend Ros, Cathy is surprised to find out about their relationship. Now that the manipulative Cathy sees Tanya as an easy target, will she let anything stand in her way? PC Lance Powell tries to work out who sent him the text message about the bomb, and realises only three people had his new number: his family, his boyfriend... and Conor Murphy. Powell tells PC Sheelagh Murphy about his suspicions, and she is disgusted that he could think her son could be capable of the bombing. DCI Meadows leads a search on Sheelagh's house, and the phone used to send the message is found in Conor's room. Conor is arrested when he is found brawling with a friend of his. His friend admits to the bombing, and Conor admits to his mother that he is gay. With the bomber found, Supt. Okaro must bite the bullet and apologise to Jerome Taylor for accusing him, but Taylor says it's too late, and he is determined to destroy Okaro's career. Trainee DC Gary Best goes undercover to catch a drug dealer with DC Ken Drummond and DC Rob Thatcher, but finds himself at the wrong end of a beating.
