Seriál Sherlock byl představen jako jedno 60 minutové drama vytvořené pro Mezinárodní televizní festival v Edinburghu v srpnu 2008, které bude vysíláno na podzim 2009, se záměrem produkovat celou sérii, pokud bude tento pilot úspěšný. BBC se nakonec rozhodla, že pilot neodvysílá, jak je obvyklé, ale rovnou zadala natáčení třech 90 minutových epizod.
