Em baixo, mas não arrumado, o trombonista Antoine Batiste toca no primeiro desfile de charanga, ou "segunda linha", em Nova Orleães desde o Furacão Katrina. A atuação coloca-o cara a cara com a sua ex, LaDonna, que gere um bar local quando não está em Baton Rouge com os filhos e o novo marido. Depois de assistir ao desfile, o DJ da rádio Davis McAlary perde as estribeiras na sua estação e numa loja de discos e é depois expulso do restaurante pela sua às vezes namorada Janette Desautel. Entretanto, Albert Lambreaux regressa às ruínas da sua casa e do bar onde treinava, decidido a limpar tudo apesar do ceticismo do seu filho Delmond, um tocador trompete itinerante, e da filha Davina. Enquanto a advogada de direitos civis "Toni" Bernette tenta encontrar Daymo, o irmão desaparecido de LaDonna, o seu rabugento marido, o professor de inglês Creighton Bernette, vocifera contra as forças que traíram Nova Orleães no seguimento da tempestade.
