Los Ingalls se mudan a Winoka donde, gracias a Adam, Charles encuentra trabajo como gerente y Caroline de cocinera en el mismo hotel, y en el que se alojarán con las niñas. Aquí también llegan la familia Garvey y los Oleson, con la dificultad que comporta para todos el cambio de vida de la ciudad.

Poor economic conditions cause the Ingalls to move closer to Mary. Mary is now teaching at the blind school. The Ingalls move to be closer to Mary, where she helps teach the younger blind students. Laura catches an orphan, Albert, stealing from their hotel. Charles becomes friends with Albert and invites him to Mary's birthday party.

A cause de la crise économique, Charles Ingalls se retrouve dans l'obligation de quitter sa paisible petite ferme avec toute sa famille, pour s'établir à Winoka, une ville de l'Ouest, proche du domicile de Mary, qui donne des cours à des enfants aveugles. A peine installé, Charles sympathise avec Albert, un adolescent qui, pour survivre, commet des petits larcins...

Die Ingalls ziehen in die Nähe von Mary, wo sie hilft, die jüngeren blinden Schüler zu unterrichten. Laura erwischt das Waisenkind Albert beim Stehlen in ihrem Hotel. Charles freundet sich mit Albert an und lädt ihn zu Marys Geburtstagsparty ein.
