Jarod s'apprête à quitter Atlanta après l'arrestation d'un policier véreux. En écoutant les ondes radio de la police, il apprend qu'un jeune prodige des échecs, Bryce Banks, a été enlevé dans la nuit. Il enquête et découvre que Bryce disputait des parties sur l'internet, et qu'il avait rendez-vous, le soir où il a disparu, avec un certain Joshua. Il reçoit bientôt l'aide d'un célèbre "profiler" du FBI, Samantha Waters...
