讨论 The Golden Girls

I knew of someone who lived like the character in this episode. Supposedly they were unable to leave their apartment due to social phobias, etc, but it always made me wonder how does someone actually get disability benefits to begin with, or do their shopping and other things that need to be done. I didn't know this person that well, I only knew 'of them,' but Social Security does requires you to see therapists and doctors to get approved for benefits. I'm not sure how they manage that when on the one hand they are claiming they can't leave their house.

I know on this episode they never said how Jimmy was getting his money to live, but the ones I knew of who are shut-ins get government benefits.

No idea how it works in the USA, honestly. I am a psychologist and I deal with patients who suffer from severe mental conditions that stop them from having a "normal" life. As far as I know, in my country, there's no such thing as a Social Security for people with social anxiety. People who suffer from other conditions, like, manic depression, for example, can collect a small amount of money every month (about 350 American dollars) but that doesn't even begin to cover their basic needs. Those people usually have to rely on their friends and relatives' care.

While I don't find that episode particularly funny, I think it's somewhat realistic, in a way. I mean, extreme social anxiety can't be "cured" all of a sudden and they approach the subject in a very "honest" way.

I think insome ways it was showing how people become recluses.

I don't think that Dorothy could really help him. He needed help
