In episodes where the ghost's face was damaged at death (e.g., David Paymer's face after an explosion and fire), during the course of the episode the face gradually gets repaired and becomes normal looking. I've wondered whether this so the audience doesn't continue to get grossed out throughout the episode, or whether it symbolizes the gradual resolution to the ghost's unresolved issues before they cross over, or maybe both.

I noticed that, too, in several episodes. I agree that it may have served the dual purpose you suggested.
