4 - loved the school.
3 - great end to a great storyline.
1 - the one that started it all. It feels so strange rewatching for the 3rd, 4th times.
2 - harder to get into since it's so different from the first season.
5 - meh.

I liked all the seasons equally, except for season 2. They say to give season 2 a chance, but I just can't seem to get into it.

Your ranking seems to be the consensus but I would list them this way 4, 2,1,3, 5
Season 2 gets better with every viewing. I hated season 2 the first time I saw it. 2nd and 3rd viewing you catch so much more. Season 5 compared to others is not as good. Only 10 episodes. But still overall not a terrible season

mmm I would have to go back and rewatch season 2 then! maybe my rankings would change, but tbh I found it even harder to follow than the 1st season upon my first viewing.

Trust me. Your 2nd viewing you will ask yourself. " what the hell did I watch the first time around". There is just toomuch to take in and it's a bit confusing. The Greeks , the port. The shipping container murders. Ziggy, Nick, Avon in jail, stringer running things. Like a big meal it's best to eat it in small bites. Others that didn't like season 2 first time end up liking it after next viewing

I need to watch this series again. It's just outstanding. I think season 4 on the school system and the mayor's race was the best. You had these great kid actors playing tragic roles and you'll see the beginning of these difficult lives. We see the corruption of politics. I had no idea at the time that Aiden Gillen (playing Carcetti) was Irish. Great performances all around.
I like season 5 the least. I didn't care so much about the newspaper characters and the thing with McNulty and the homeless at the end wasn't too plausible and made The Wire stray into not so good story-telling.

Same here. Season 2 was initially jarring for me. What's this? I missed the focus on the characters we met in season one but it gets better as you go along.

I agree on season 2. I had friends quitting the series because of that season.
Especially at first you are encountered with so many new faces at a harbor while you are rather interested in Baltimor-West.
But its really cool how season 2 builds up to season 3 and how it unfolds Stringers real nasty personality.

Season 2, by a long way!
Admittedly it was unexpected as I was expecting a straight follow-on from S1. But then you realise the writers were trying to offer different points of view from different perspectives - in this case the dock unions and how the drugs were imported and distributed into Baltimore.
Seasons 3, 4, 1 and 5 follow. As much as I liked season 5 it felt hurried and half baked (not helped by the studio cancelling the show midstream). And as much as I loved Jimmy and his dismissive approach to "rank", I really could not get my head round what he did in S5.
