Discussão American Dad!

Edgy adult cartoons. When did they start? Betty Boop? Early Looney Tunes? Nah, they were quite status quo, reinforcing stereotypes and isms and things that were uncomfortable, creepy even.

The Flintstones? The Jetsons? Wait Till Your Father Gets Home? Perhaps, but still light-hearted.

The Simpsons was sharp satire. But it opened a floodgate.

South Park. King of the Hill. Family Guy. Thde piffle headlining this thread. These went from the sublime to the ridiculous. Crass, obsessed with toilet humor - baser, low-brow, offensive for the sake of it.

When, oh when, will this fad just fade out? We had the american apple pie family shows of the 50s (My Three Sons, Father Knows Best, Leave It To Beaver), then the big families (Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, Eight is Enough) of the 60s, then the political edge of the 70s sitcoms (All In the Family, Maud, The Jeffersons, Sandford and Son, Chico and the Man, Good Times), then the wholesome family hugging sitcoms of the 80s (Family Ties, Cosby Show, Growing Pains), then the swinging singles sitcoms of the 90s (Seinfeld, Friends)...all these fads faded.

Hopefully, we're finally reaching the end of this fad.

Shut up Haley no one cares about your list of fads. The show is irreverent and some people like that.

You are no less nor more entitled to your opinion than I am to mine. Thanks for sharing, for whatever it was worth (which, for the record, is likely even less than my opinion was to you. Go figure).

I overreacted and I'm embarassed, so my apologies.

This show had moments of hilarity for me, but has many, many episodes that try too hard and miss the mark. Even for fans of the show, it has more than jumped the shark at this point. But if regular shark-jumping is what the show does, when will it have the good sense to end?

Animation allows for styles of comedy that cannot exist in other forms. Edgy cartoons will be no less relevant than edgy comedy. My guess is your opinion is affected by overexposure, and "edgy cartoon fatigue" has set in. I feel it, too. This show has become tiresome, and I'm sad that (usally American) shows keep going until nobody likes them anymore. If I'm right, then is this why you think of these trends as "fads"?

Doesn't the corporate drive to desperately overindulge and flood the market until the trend dies explain why new and novel things become popular, cloned, ubiquitous, tiresome and fade away? If so, then these fads will never go away. They're just another example of how business ruins art, and how it artificially extends the lifetime of shows that should quit while they're still appreciated.

Your display of maturity is sadly quite rare these days.

I'd be an ass not to acknowledge and accept.

Respect.

I don't qualify as a fan of the show, so I hadn't even given it attention to this point. But for those who enjoyed it, if it has reached this point, we may be converging to the same position from opposite directions.

Great question.

Animation allows for styles of comedy that cannot exist in other forms. Edgy cartoons will be no less relevant than edgy comedy.

Good point. And true enough. Each generation pushes limits and advances the form.

My guess is your opinion is affected by overexposure, and "edgy cartoon fatigue" has set in.

Yes. I also find these shows increasingly unrelatable culturally, and it just seemed like one after the other of a particular fabric I'm not interested in.

I feel it, too. This show has become tiresome, and I'm sad that (usally American) shows keep going until nobody likes them anymore.

I liked Married... with Children. It was unceremoniously cancelled after going on long past its relevance. That ignominious end did not do justice to how great the show was in its prime, but it's on the showrunners to know how to best take care of their product.

The producers of Seinfeld were ready to throw a busload of money at him and the cast, and they walked away on top, leaving the money on the table.

If I'm right, then is this why you think of these trends as "fads"?

The Beatles were a 60s band. They had a voice that spoke to what the 60s started out as. During their run, the world changed, their voice no longer spoke to what the world became. They disbanded in 1970, knowing it was over. Psychadelic rock was over too, it was on top for a time, and that time passed.

Doesn't the corporate drive to desperately overindulge and flood the market until the trend dies explain why new and novel things become popular, cloned, ubiquitous, tiresome and fade away? If so, then these fads will never go away.

Psychadelic rock and Motown came, peaked (60s), and declined.

Punk rock, funk and disco came, peaked (70s) and declined.

Hair metal, new wave and hip-hop came, peaked (80s) and declined.

Grunge and gangster rap came, peaked (90s) and declined.

Art captures, processes and synthesizes moments in time. I previously commented on TV show eras. Hopefully referencing music gives some contrast.

They're just another example of how business ruins art, and how it artificially extends the lifetime of shows that should quit while they're still appreciated.

I think so, too. It's a fine balance to jump on a bandwagon and know when to exit. Some do it better than others. Again, I cite the old adage, "from the sublime (hey, this new thing is interesting, let's ride with it for a bit) to the ridiculous (okay, we've said all there is to say here, we should wrap it up but, nah, let's flog this dead horse)."

Otherwise, hey, THANK YOU, for (re) engaging my post with such thoughtful comments. This is what makes this site enjoyable, and I appreciate opportunities to learn from others as well as share ideas for others' consideration.

Cheers.

Why would someone who isn't a fan of the show, and hasn't given it any attention, want to "Make it stop"? I understand your point was for the genre as a whole, but still. There is an ocean of worthy media out there for literally anyone to find something they like, why focus your attention on things that you don't enjoy? Why make a case to stop something you can very easily just not watch? All shows will end in due time, those who are interested can enjoy, those who are not interested can enjoy something else.

P.S. - I think you would qualify as what some refer to as a "hater". Just saying. Respectfully of course.

Within the conversation above are thoughts that speak to your question — not sure how typing them again will make them any clearer.

True enough. Different strokes, or some such.

Of course! And, maybe so. But, for what I see of that material, I'm not sure that's so bad.

Cheers!
