Discuss House of Cards

Who exactly is Jane Davis, the "Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade?" Her actions bear very little relation to her official job title. Does she represent the "deep state," or just some deep pockets from the private sector? What do you think?

I think her and Usher are working together but for whom and to what capacity remains to be seen.

It was something she said to Usher at the party before he had to run. Don't want to spoil too much but it seems to me they have a very complicated background.

@Jana What do you mean you "don't want to spoil too much?" I've seen all the episodes, if there were some cues I missed, let me know.

I added the [SPOILERS] tag to the topic title.

What did she mean when she said, and I'm paraphrasing, "I was holding the baby in my arms and I looked down on her" something like that. She looked really sad and he looked so uncomfortable. Maybe I was tired from binging and missed something but did she and Usher have a baby that died? If it was supposed to be implied, then it must be one hell of a cliffhanger for next season.

I don't recall this scene at all. I guess it's time for a rewatch then. grinning

I've been all over the net and I can't seem to find any information about it. It's so clear to me though, they met at the entrance at the party, she had a beautiful gown on and he had a tux. They talked about other things, memories I think, to let us know they had history. When he left she just bowed her head down as if she was really sad.

Maybe I dozed off and dreamt the whole thing grin

I'm going to look for the scene later today when I get home.

There was a scene and I think Claire was doing a speech and Davis was there holding a baby.

I think the speech was actually about the Syrian refugee crisis. She said something like "I could feel the baby's breath on my arms, but couldn't bear to look at it." I wasn't watching, only listening, so I didn't catch any interaction or sadness, but it was definitely there for a reason.

BTW, Jane was the most annoying character in S5 IMO. She just drove me crazy.

If so, it's an unresolved mystery we will have to chew on till next season. Isn't it a bit strange though to throw in a tiny hint of something in the middle of the show and then don't touch the subject again? If this is going to be a "thing", the first breadcrumb wasn't big enough in my opinion.

I just went back and rewatched both scenes. After talking shop Mark says "Let me buy you dinner or something." then, "What? What happened? What's the matter?" as she is obviously upset. She replies, "I had that child in my arms. I could feel her breath on me but I couldn't look down." He gets a call. She is obviously upset.

Here's my take: They obviously have a history, and likely an intimate one. The way she asks for gum, says he was better when he smoked, etc etc. Remember when they "vetted" each other to the Underwoods, they were not being completely honest. Obviously more there. Now the baby...my guess is they are post-abortive. That they had a relationship, got pregnant and decided to terminate the pregnancy due to timing/careers. That or they lost a child. Anyway, that's definitely the vibe I get. Even the call that interrupts their conversation he says "I have to go take care of this." And she says, "yes, yes, go." like it's been done before. One final clue is that this scene comes right after Claire kills Tom, so it cements the idea of killing someone you love to further your own career/agenda. BTW, this all happens from minute 36-40 in S5E12 if anyone needs the reference.

Ooh I like this! Well, not the tragedy bit, that's sad of course, but even though I don't care much for Jane I would love to see if their story and past will be revealed and have significance next season. I'm quite a fan of Usher and Campbell Scott was the only reason I stood by Royal Pains all those years.

I thought it was about wanting to make sure they started a war with Syria. That she brought up the child issue because it was a victim of the war, and the series blamed Assad for it.

Me too. I think they probably do have some history, and definitely some collaboration, but the little girl thing felt more about Syrian victims than some lost love child, but with this show it could be anything... it's like 'Lost' in politics....
