I couldn't get into this show... It was a bit disconcerting how stunted the male character were, emotionally, sexually and socially, I find it difficult to use the word men to describe them.

Despite some of them being able to make a good living and be in a good social position, they seem incredibly immature and like they have no internal life or are unable to relate to other characters as an adult or to assert themselves... Also, very little cleverness, playful teasing, irony or wit...

I know it's difficult these days to have your life sorted out, but that doesn't seem to be the dynamic here... Where is the masculinity?

They do progress. Schmidt gets married, Winston becomes a police officer, Nick... uh.

this.

but are they still man-children? I didn't watch that far...

Eh, a bit. It's all for the sake of comedy, though. It's not they're playing video games in their moms' basements.

I think you're pretty much describing the entire cast (I guess with the exception of the guest characters, Reagan and Aly) @Renovatio . Its what @Halberstram said, all for the sake of comedy. I think that's pretty much the standard for these shows. I don't think it'll be interesting if they all seem to have their stuff together.

Tonight, on New Girl, Schmidt transfers matured bonds into a newly opened, tax-deferred IRA!

HILARIOUS HIJINKS ENSUES!!!

yeah... i guess the annoying thing is that this is the norm for most of this series and most other series as well... i think show runners or executives are just taking the easy route...

I'm sure many of these writers can squeeze quite a bit of humour out of people finally getting their stuff together and then the dynamic changes between them and their friends, or they themselves change (maybe, they realise they have become jerks, or were actually jerks but just didn't have the opportunity, etc...)... Or, alternatively they realise the irony that they always had the opportunity to "man-up" but didn't for whatever their particular reason and go a bit crazy having discovered the world of adults... Conversely A fall from grace can be very funny if handled properly... as can mixing the adolescent with the mature in terms of behaviour, comedy of manners kind of thing...

I just think that would be so much more interesting than just doing the desexualised man-child thing... It's a missed opportunity... I get it, maybe it's just not my thing... to each their own...

Also, the male characters are all kinda meek and not very manly... they don't have much presence either... it this because of the success of The Big Bang Theory?

This is what I like about 30 Rock... Alec Baldwin really makes that show... Yeah, it's not as subtle as I'd prefer, but he bring a lot of what is missing on TV...

Well, Leslie Nielsen in The Naked Gun series: he's incredibly stupid and childishly ignorant. Do you find his character funny?

@Halberstram

I think he's hilarious!

Good point... but somehow, as ridiculous as he is, he seems more virile and masculine than any of the boys on New Girl!

Also, better dialogue for the most part... but Naked Gun is mostly constant jokes, one-liners and slapstick... it's tough for a sitcom to compete with that...

I dunno... I haven't really given it this much thought before... maybe I just prefer a bit more attitude in my comedy... whether it's slapstick, irony, satire or farce...

For example, I find American Psycho very, very funny... and I love Dr. Strange-love even though it's a silly as it is serious...

Or, maybe it's the rom-com element... it reminds me of too very bad and forgettable movies... Perhaps I had different expectations with Zooey Deschanel staring in this... I had only seen her in 500 days of Summer, The Happening and All the Real Girls, which I liked for the most part...

The premise of the show is probably the biggest cause. Who lives with three roommates in their thirties? It's only been this last season that Schmidt moves out, with his wife. The previous season Nick purchases the bar, and Winston becomes a cop.

yeah, that's probably it...
