Jeez, I thought the second season was, arguably, the best of the six so far. I loved MURDER HOUSE too, but ASYLUM was really artfully done with great performances from Sarah Paulson and James Cromwell.
I think different people will like different seasons depending on what kind of horror stuff they're into. I do think the first and second seasons are the most competently crafted. The first wins out because it has a more coherent story; the second season is all over the place in that regard. The series in general is a mess and shows that Ryan Murphy doesn't care, he just wants money.

I must have been thinking of a different series. I just binge watched the first 5 seasons on Netflix and loved them all. lol
oh well, guess I had a senior moment
One review of the series noted that "in some of the best horror pictures like "Psycho" the real horror came from the suspense and the wondering of what was going to happen and that the violence was secondary". I agree with that point of view.
Too many modern "horror" films resort to really cheap tricks, sudden loud noises, objects rapidly approaching the camera so as to appear to the viewers that they are flying straight at their faces, or other camera tricks designed to disorient the viewer, even make them slightly nauseous.
American Horror Story tells stories of people in scary situations. The story delivers the horror instead of the effects. And that is a much higher quality kind of film.
I am looking forward to the sixth season when Netflix adds it to the series. Hopefully they will keep this series going awhile.
Just look at the clip on IMDb for AHS 7 "Clown Cult" it's so out there I wonder if it might be a joke. Does anyone know if this is truly going to based on a Clown Cult? It seems to lack female cast almost completely, but time shall tell on September 5th.

Seasons 1 and 2 are the best, and 4 comes in as a close 2nd. The rest of the season suck.
I thought S5 Hotel kind of sucked in comparison to other seasons as well as last season and even that wasn't very good, though I forced myself to watch it all, very experimental ish. It had some good parts and some BAD parts, but S5 Hotel is imo the runt in the series.
I thought Freakshow was a confused mess. The witches season felt weak, apart from Bates. It's such a shame there are all these great actors bound with poor story writing now.
I think HOTEL needs to be binge-watched to truly appreciate it. Also the art direction and Lady Gaga's perfect casting are strong attributes.
As someone who despises week to week waiting for shows, I, for some reason, watched Hotel about an episode a week and you're probably right it in that sense. In the last few years I've been noticing a big difference that the ability to continue watching the story unfold uninterrupted makes for a lot of top notch shows, nothing had been formatted like that previously in TV and matched with intelligent writing(non spoonfed) no less. There are tons of shows I watch now that I, back in the day, wouldn't have watched if I was exposed to it on TV w/commercials week to week.
The awesome fact that more and more shows are choosing to run with continuous/unfolding plots in which it takes you 3-4 episodes to get to know all the characters well and the grand scheme of the production and it's quality(or not)
is so great imo. I love investing time in a series' and NOTHING EVER in a single film can compare to the fruits of labor produced after investing lots of time when the payoff comes in a series and you're literally feeling the hairs on your body rise and your heart start to rapidly beat from all that excess adrenaline, dopamine and the emotional gut punch you get from that pay-off. It's exactly like a drug free high(just our internal chemicals reacting to stimuli), BrBa had many of these great pay-offs and True Detective S1 had it, just as quick examples that most people can relate to.
Of course I have a lot of time on my hands and I understand why there is a need for case of the week or basically stories that begin and resolve in a 42 minute program. People need that kind of stuff, especially busy people, shows where they aren't required to keep 100% of their attention on and if they miss a week it's no big deal at all. TV was stuck in that kind of abysmal rotation up until around 2000 and it didn't really kick in until 2010+ or so when we started to seriously integrate tech platforms to be able to offer these kinds of shows(even though I've been free streaming since 03'😇). I just wish reality shows would all get cancelled, every last one of those SOB's. Though maybe since these reality crap fests cost basically nothing to produce they are the reason channels have the extra cash to produce GOOD actual series' , were that true it would be a worthy compromise, but I'm quite sure my theory is complete bullsh!t.

For me the worst was season six and three. I still haven't seen five. But 1, 2 and 4 were my favorites.
