Quote from article linked below:
"The telephone rings in the modest office of famed television writer David Milch.
It is good news.
The 71-year-old Buffalo native was told he is being hired to run the second season of a program that was successful in year one."
So the question is, which show? It almost has to be HBO (or maybe Cinemax) since they have him under contract. There are currently two sophomore efforts underway at HBO: The Young Pope and Westworld. The most interesting prospect of the two is obviously the latter. Is Jonathon Nolan handing over the showrunner reigns of Westworld to focus on writing? Would Milch taker over a show that will not offer full creative license by way of running the writer's room?
Or, how about this... And I am totally reaching here. Perhaps the article contains a bit of misdirection and the show in question simply enjoyed a ton of success in it's first season. Yes folks, I am referring to the HBO megabrand "True Detective." If considered as a third option, it makes the most sense. The structure of the show is close-ended by virtue of it's anthology format. This keeps Milch tightly focused, which HBO most certainly would want from their resident improvisational genius (ie: the suits don't want to blow money on an open ended shooting schedule, ala Deadwood). And let's face it, the subject matter is right in Milch's wheelhouse.
If Milch kills it, hopefully it will provide the currency he needs to solidify a (re)greenlight for the Deadwood movie. Any way you slice it, this will be interesting!
