You're right about how Dwight manipulated the entire situation. And you're right about Negan. Negan does have an enormous ego and paranoia about his status as leader. That's why he brainwashes his top followers into thinking just like him. This is a personality trait that is not present in the comic book Negan. In the comic, Negan's followers have the uptmost respect for him because he is the baddest of them all. They don't fear him. The other people in the community do though. They are like sheep much like in the show. But the ones he has in command, respect Negan. They are just like him and there is no brainwashing like in the show.
