Astronomers and geologists seem to agree that there would be no immediate catastrophe; the biggest effect is that the tides would immediately stop, and the oceans would become very calm. This is actually very bad since it would lead to the extinction of countless marine life and a major ecological disaster. But it's not quite as dramatic as earthquakes and tidal waves (actually the opposite).
In the first episode, they receive "news" from earth about the early results of the moon leaving. And in the episode "Another Time, Another Place" when they return to Earth several years after the original departure, it's basically a wasteland except for a few small areas.
